Sue,
I can only speak from experience so just take this as unbiased information. I have been experiencing these headaches for about 25 years. They are almost always the same. Very painful and absolute. During a cluster period I know when I will get them and what pain lies ahead. When I was younger (less mature) and inexperienced, I would get mad and VERY inpatient. Especially when someone tried to talk to me. Big no, no!!! My family and friends know to just leave me alone and be very quiet. They don’t try to help or ask me how I’m doing.
In the beginning I used to inflict pain to myself. Banging my head, sticking things in my eye like Q-tips and tooth picks. I even punched a wall or two but I never touched another person and I always remember what I did. Vividly!!! I can account for every second, every heartbeat of pain. When I get a headache it’s just me and my mind. I don’t have a choice. That’s probably why I get so mad when I’m interrupted. I ‘think’ in order to relieve the pain and I need total concentration.
As I’ve grown older I have become more patient and somewhat compassionate. I understand how it must feel to watch someone go through these. I guess I’m not as selfish as I used to be. I would think that your boyfriend would be used to these headaches by now, and know what is in store for him. He would have experienced his headaches around others also. Ask them how he acts when he has a headache. If he doesn’t act in the same manner, watch out! The headaches my just be an excuse for a deeper problem.
Good luck,
Ken
