I agree with your last decision. All can be turned in music. Music is another way to express feelings, is not "inappropriate".
I also was astonished from the things in NY, and have had no words (no good words) to say in help for this. But I have suffered like you Americans for this. Because I know many of you, and because this was a crime against the mankind.
Oh, BTW, after 13 years I started again to play keyboards in a group. We need a guitarist... could you play with us in Wednesday and Friday evening? :-)
