First, let's get the facts straight, shall we? I can guarantee you that the fellow who got arrested was NOT arrested for receiving spores. Spores are perfectly legal to possess (except, for some bizarre reason, in California and Georgia... but why has no one has ever busted the biology departments of the Universities there?) since they contain no psilocybin.
He was arrested because he was found to be in possession of a controlled substance... psilocybin... in the form of psilocybin mushrooms. If he was really growing only enough for personal use, my guess is that either the case will be dismissed or he will eventually end up paying a fine and "time served"... unless he has prior convictions.
This is a perfect example of why I get REALLY nervous when people start volunteering in a public forum to provide anything other than legal substances, i.e. spores. You can bet your bottom dollar that this guy got busted because someone tipped off the police, NOT because the postal authorities noticed a package labelled "Yo! This package contains stuff that can be used to eventually produce an illegal substance!"
No, what happened was this unfortunate soul was less than discreet. Too bad, so sad.
For what it's worth, if I lived in the United States, I would order spores from a reliable spore vendor, spend a few days gathering growing materials, then start my project. Believe me, if the authorities suspected anything was amiss, they would be at my door within twenty-four hours of delivery. So what? There is nothing... I repeat... NOTHING they could do to me for possessing spores.
BUT...
I certainly wouldn't tell ANYONE what I was up to. I have been accused of being crazy at times, but I have never been accused of being stupid.
As for taking a vacation in a country where it is legal... I have mentioned this before. It gets expensive, though, and travelling while in the middle of a cluster cycle is not the easiest thing to do.
