I believe the idea is too avoid taking calcium SUPPLEMENTS while taking magnesium supplements simultaneously, since calcium interferes with the absorption of magnesium.

So, for example, if one were to take 500 to 1000 mg daily of magnesium supplement , it would be counterproductive to take 500 mg of calcium supplement at the same time. It would be better to obtain your needed calcium solely from food sources instead.

Inevitably, SOME of the magnesium from the supplement would fail to be absorbed, due to the presence of calcium in the normal diet, but this is probably one of the reasons why such a high level of magnesium supplement is recommended in the first place.
