Susan, there is an excercise to keep your neck absolutely straight, if collars don't work (and I can recommend them).

You push your shoulders down, lift the back of your head and press your chin down into your throat - try to look down your nose like one of those flamengo dancers, very haughty.
It gives the discs in your neck a lot more room.
It is much better for them than rolling your head round and round/

Don't know of course whether it helps for the pain you mentioned...
