Riccardo, my friend who would not hurt even the ignoramus who attacked him: Wop belongs in the long--and ever growing--list of racial slurs such as Spick, Dago, Nigger, Slope, Gook, Chink, Cracker (me), Polack, Greaser, Honky and Whitey. Most of us have used one or more of these appellations in our lives, and most of us have learned that such name-calling is destructive of any relationship. Some terms, such as Gook or Kraut, come from being at war with other races. Because the U.S. is such a "mixing pot," we are more affected by the polarization of races that pervades and controls every issue of importance. I call people from Georgia "crackers," in jest, because I am from Georgia, but I would take offense if someone called me a cracker meaning that I am of inferior intelligence. I might be dumb as hell, but don't tell me that it's because I was born in the South. Riccardo, you're not a Wop (unless you choose to call yourself that). You are a caring, sensitive man with a great sense of humor who happens to have been born in Italy. Of course, there is that "kissing" thing. :-)
