Digging In Hard Ground

Surely, I thought,
this won't take long,
for I just want to see
what's underneath
this bed of rock,
though old and hard.

I'll simply strip away the shell
from the evil underneath.
Then I found a guarding
ground that fought me at my best
and quickly weakened me.

Open, pit, I say to me,
open and let me see
what must be underneath.
If I must blast, I will you know;
there is no turning back.
I will rip myself apart
and clear the way for me to see
the demon underneath.

There is no other way to live,
for I must face what's
underneath.
I must rid my soul of thee.
