Consider you're going to the local car repair shop and get hold of one of those rubber hammers they use to smooth wrinkled car bodies.
Whenever you are hit by one of those 'headaches', you take this hammer and strike it on your head, over and over again. And when your arm gets tired and to lame to hold the hammer any longer, you ask your wife to continue to hammer your head.
How the heck could a guy who has still all his eggs in the basket do such as thing? Simply, he tries to hammer the pain out of his head, and at the same time the pain of the hammer blows bring him some - even if only temporary - relieve from the cluster pain. So, a cluster 'headache' is probably worse than the last hangover you remember.

This story is not made up. It was told me by my sister, who corresponds with other clusterheads the old fashioned way with paper and typewriter. This head banger as a 45+ years veteran of CH. He lost his hearing 20 years ago due to his hammering. He was diagnosed correctly only a couple of years ago. Oh well, he comes from the Engadin valley, an area renown for its crazy people.
