Margi,
I definitely think you’re on to something with the “pollen and trees” thing. The maple pollen has
reached record levels this year. I live in Northeast Ohio, and I’m surrounded by TONS of maple
trees - even in my own yard. I’ve been miserable during the day, especially when I’m outside -
because of all the pollen. I know for a fact this has made my headaches worse. I can feel that
heavy allergy feeling in my nose and head all the time. When we had a two-day rain, the
problems began to cease, then came back when it cleared up. My headaches were a lot easier to
deal with during the rain. It’s not that I think the maple pollen triggered this cluster. They started
April 11 before all the pollen was in the air. However, I’m positive the maple pollen combined
with the headaches and fatigue led to a nasty sinus infection, which ALWAYS makes my
episodes much worse and more frequent. I’m on an antibiotic right now, but I can’t take the
prescription antihistamine they gave me because the “dried up” effect makes the headaches
worse. Hence, on a hot, dry day - my allergic reaction will almost guarantee me bad headaches at
night. Incidentally, Allegra is the antihistamine my doctor gave me for the maple pollen allergy.
They’re prepackaged free samples, so at least I didn’t waste money on them, only to find out I
couldn’t take them. I tried switching to simple Sudafed, but that didn’t help the allergy. Instead, I
just had a worse runny nose. I’m hoping the pollen level eases up soon. All the time I spent
outdoors over the Memorial Day weekend didn’t help matter either, but what was I supposed to
do......hide in the house while my family was picnicking outside? My nine-yr.-old son has been
having problems due to the maple pollen as well. Nasty stuff, huh? --Vince
