Hey Scorpion,

In the 10 years I've been a member here at CH.com, I've made it a practice, not to jump ugly, belittle, or throw the BS flag at another members post no matter how ridiculous...   In this case, I'm compelled to make an exception as PSA comments are clearly in order.

I realize you had good intentions when you made the post above...  That said, do not stare directly at or near the sun at any time of the day even with dark glasses... Doing so will cause irreparable burn damage to the retina.  Even sun glasses won't help if you stare at or near the sun unless the sunglasses are OSHA rated as safe for welding with an arc welder.

The following optical coherence tomography (OCT) scan of a retina illustrates irreparable burn damage caused by looking at the sun for just a few seconds.
Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

This OTC scan is clear evidence that staring at the sun without adequate protection will burn your retina in the area you need most to read, drive and do most things that require sharp visual acuity.

I'm a retired Navy fighter pilot with over 3000 hours flight time in Navy jets.  I always wore a flight helmet with a dark visor during daylight operations as flying at any altitude above the clouds caused an increased exposure to the UV B in direct sunlight.  The UV B in sunlight is so strong, it faded the shoulders of my Nomex flight suits in a matter of a few hours flight time.

When I've gone skiing in winter, sailing and fishing in summer, I've always worn protective sunglasses.  I'm 72 and I still have 20/20 vision.

I can understand your excitement that something reduced the frequency and severity of your cluster headache.  That said, exchanging a reduction in the frequency and severity of your CH for blindness is a very bad trade. There are other more effective methods of preventing your CH that do not come at the price of blindness.

What you experienced was very likely due to cutaneous vitamin D3 production caused by being out in the sun.  You can accomplish this safely and more effectively without looking at or near the sun if you go out in the mid day sun for 15 minutes clad in a speedo bathing suit, sun glasses and no sun screen.

You can also start the anit-inflammatory regimen with 10,000 IU/day vitamin D3 and the cofactors.  This regimen will do wonders in preventing your CH and may even help improve your vision.

Take care and please consider editing your post.

If you listen to your body, does staring at the sun give you a sense of pleasure... or discomfort and pain that makes you blink and turn away?

Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

Solar retinopathy can be caused by staring at the sun (regardless of its phase), but few people can stand to look directly at our nearest star for very long without pain. It does happen occasionally — medical journals record cases in which people high on drugs have stared at the sun for long periods of time, causing serious damage.

Adherents of sun-worshipping religious sects are also victims. In 1988, for example, Italian ophthalmologists treated 66 people for solar retinopathy after a sun-staring ritual.

To each his own...  However, suggesting something clearly injurious to vision to others already suffering from cluster headache isn't among things most of us would consider worth sharing...

For reference, there's nothing synthetic about vitamin D3.  You skin makes it when the UV B in sunlight strikes molecules of 7-Dehydrocholesterol in the fatty layer.  Medicinal vitamin D3 is refined from wool grease, a.k.a., lanolin.

Take care, see your ophthalmologist, and you might want to start training a seeing eye dog...

If you want to double down again... have at it.  I'm done commenting in this thread.

Well....golly...Batch is done...and for good reason....but I have to SHARE myself....

The short version...NOT my strong suit is:

"A FOOL and his (fill in the blank) are SOON parted"

The longer version...here in biblical terms...but religion is not necessary to the understanding of wisdom...and which does take some thoughtful study...so good luck Scorpion...is:

Five Types of Fools

simple, silly, sensual, scorning, and steadfast fools

In the Old Testament, the word fool is actually a translation of five different Hebrew words that reflect subtle differences in “types” of fools. Unfortunately, the English translation makes it more difficult to identify the characteristics of five types of fools, but with a careful search of Scripture these differences can be distinguished.

Wise counselors—parents, pastors, friends, spouses—need to understand the progression of rebellion that is reflected in the Bible’s description of fools. If you learn to perceive the characteristics of a simple fool, silly fool, sensual fool, scorning fool, and steadfast fool, you will be equipped to identify and respond to such fools with wisdom and discernment.

The Simple Fool

The Hebrew word for “simple [fool]” is pethîy (peth-EE). The root word from which it is derived, pâthâh, implies extreme vulnerability, literally meaning “to be opened up.” The simple fool opens his mind to any passing thought and opens his arms to any passing stranger. In other words, he lacks discernment. He has an over-simplified view of life and fails to recognize the cause-and-effect sequences that affect every area of life. (See Proverbs 22:3.)

Because the simple fool is not discerning, he is easily captivated by all kinds of enticements and deceptions. He is dangerously immature, extremely gullible, and intensely curious. In the absence of instruction and consistent discipline, the simple fool will naturally become more foolish. A simple fool is especially vulnerable to seduction, lacking an understanding of the irreversible consequences of moral failure. (See Proverbs 7:6–7.)

The Proverbs provide instruction for the simple fool: “The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel … give subtlety to the simple [pethîy], to the young man knowledge and discretion” (Proverbs 1:4).

Scorning fools will seek out simple fools and try to become their heroes. Therefore, to protect simple fools from the destructive influence of the scorning fool, it is critical to bring swift correction to scorning fools. “Smite a scorner, and the simple [pethîy] will beware …” (Proverbs 19:25).

The Silly Fool

The Hebrew word that refers to a “silly fool” is ’eviyl (ev-EEL). Its definition is “to be perverse, silly.” The mouth of a silly fool often gets him in trouble. “Wise men lay up knowledge: but the mouth of the foolish [’eviyl] is near destruction” (Proverbs 10:14; see also Proverbs 20:3). When things go wrong for a silly fool, he becomes angry, resulting in more damage. “A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty; but a fool’s [’eviyl] wrath is heavier than them both” (Proverbs 27:3).
A silly fool believes that his own way of thinking is right (see Proverbs 12:15), so much so that he reacts to instruction when it is offered: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools [’eviyl] despise wisdom and instruction” (Proverbs 1:7; see also Proverbs 10:21). Argument, persuasion, and advice from well-meaning friends fail to convince silly fools of error. Proper correction by authorities, which publicly shames the silly fool, will more often be effective in helping him change his ways. (See Proverbs 29:9 and Proverbs 7:22.)

The Sensual Fool

One who rejects the correction of parents or other authorities will become a sensual fool. This type of fool is identified in Scripture with the Hebrew word kecîyl (kess-EEL), which means “fat, i.e. stupid or silly.” The word denotes a person who seems determined to make wrong choices. He does not have a mental deficiency, but rather rejects the wisdom of God.
The sensual fool’s focus is on that which brings him immediate pleasure. He glories in that of which he should be ashamed. “It is as sport to a fool [kecîyl] to do mischief … ” (Proverbs 10:23; see also Proverbs 13:19–20).

A sensual fool is unreasonable. As a silly fool, his mouth got him into trouble. Now, as a sensual fool, his mouth gets him into more trouble. “A fool’s [kecîyl] lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes [blows]. A fool’s [kecîyl] mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul” (Proverbs 18:6–7).
Scripture gives more warnings about the sensual fool than about any other type of fool. His motives and methods are subtle. He should be avoided, because those who follow him will be led astray. “… A companion of fools [kecîyl] shall be destroyed” (Proverbs 13:20). Severe punishment is prescribed for the sensual fool: “A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the fool’s [kecîyl] back” (Proverbs 26:3, see also Proverbs 19:29).

The Scorning Fool

The Hebrew word that denotes a “scorning fool” is lűwts (LOOTS). It means “to make mouths at, i.e. to scoff.” The scorning fool’s facial expressions communicate the disdain and contempt he has in his heart toward his authorities, including parents, civil authorities, and God.
This type of fool not only has rejected truth; he also has embraced that which is abominable to God. Psalm 1:1 describes the progression of foolishness, referring to a man who first walks “in the counsel of the ungodly,” then stands “in the way of sinners,” and finally sits “in the seat of the scornful [lűwts].” The scorning fool utterly detests people and ideas that contradict his false thinking, and he expresses his scorn through derisive attitudes, behavior, and speech.

The scorning fool turns a deaf ear to rebuke: “A wise son heareth his father’s instruction: but a scorner [lűwts] heareth not rebuke” (Proverbs 13:1; see also Proverbs 14:6). Those who attempt to lead the scorning fool away from the path of destruction that he seems determined to follow will suffer his wrath. “A scorner loveth not one that reproveth him: neither will he go unto the wise” (Proverbs 15:12). “He that reproveth a scorner [lűwts] getteth to himself shame: … Reprove not a scorner [lűwts], lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee” (Proverbs 9:7–8).
A scorner must be punished—for his own sake and for the sake of those whom he can potentially influence. “Smite a scorner [lűwts], and the simple [pethîy] will beware … ” (Proverbs 19:25). “When the scorner [lűwts] is punished, the simple [pethîy] is made wise … ” (Proverbs 21:11; see also Proverbs 22:10).

The Steadfast Fool

The most dangerous type of fool is a steadfast fool. The Hebrew word nâbâl (naw-BAWL), which means “stupid, wicked,” identifies this type of person. Elsewhere in the Old Testament, nâbâl also is translated as vile person.

A steadfast fool totally rejects God and His ways. “The fool [nâbâl] hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good” (Psalm 14:1). This type of fool is self-confident and close-minded. He is his own god, freely gratifying his lower nature. It is his goal to draw as many others as possible into his evil ways. Attempts to reprove him will be futile and bring frustration to the one who tries to influence him. Only God can successfully reprove a steadfast fool.

Choose Wisdom; Reject Foolishness
In Proverbs 1:22, wisdom declares: “How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge? Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you. I will make known my words unto you. … The turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them. But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.” Let us heed this declaration and “walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise” (Ephesians 5:15; see also Proverbs 1:7, 3:35).

Well....golly...Batch is done...and for good reason....but I have to SHARE myself....

The short version...NOT my strong suit is:

1) I would never do this more than once a year if even that. You make me sound like I'm a retard staring at the sun all day. That's all you. Not me.

2) I already have really bad vision in that eye (20/40), and I only looked with that eye. Not both.

3) My eye went bad after trying O2 therapy when the mask was leaking and blowing onto my eye. The next day I had a huge floater., which never went away. My vision has since gone down in that eye.

4) I am allergic to Alpha Gal, a carbohydrate found in all mammals except some primates, which in turn, makes me allergic to most vitamin D3 supplements, so I don't take them even if I wanted to.

5) Where I work, it is my job is to research and implement new technologies and refine our current technologies. I am not the retard you would like to make me out to be. I know all about the woes of retinal burning, cataracts, and macular degeneration.

6) I would like to think no one is stupid enough to look at the sun for more than a few seconds and only with the aid of a uv atmospheric detector and always within a few minutes of sunrise or sunset. I just wanted to see if there was another cher with any experience with this. I don't believe it has anything to do with vitamin D, rather a stimulation of the retinal nerves which may have had an effect on the hypothalamus.

7) I'm betting you read about 30% of what I just wrote, and dismissed it all. Bash away. Have at it. I looked.

It also appears that you are comparing me to occultists or paganism.

May I point out that this has nothing to do with my faith, which I have plenty of.
If you want to compare apples, lets look at Ēostre.
The celebration of the goddess of fertility.
They use the rabbit and egg as a symbol of fertility and new life.
It was celebrated in spring where they would roll the eggs in the woods and have orgies.

Sound familiar? Yet when you celebrate Easter, do you claim to have any part of that?
Neither do I claim any affiliation with sun worship.

Scorpion,

I hope this works for you. I truly do.  I hate for anyone to have this pain that we all suffer.

To others and as Batch said, as a public service...please do not do this !!!!!  I realize newcomers are desperate, but read around here for a while about treatments that DO work and that DO help.  Please.

I'm just going to leave this alone.

My goal was to gather input on light therapies for the eye.
I was thinking that maybe there could be a way to simulate this with LED's or other light sources. (which would be safe of course)

I took a picture of my retina using a dark room during a cluster cycle, The effected eye's blood vessels were so constricted that the retinal reflection was white. The control test of my right eye was normal. (red eye)

I found this very interesting given that the pain is from vascular dilatation.
I'm not going to turn this thread into me repeatedly trying to explain the numerous variables that led me to try this.

I know that this is not a place to collaborate, but rather to dictate. I just forget sometimes.
How hard is it to say, "screw that, I'm not doing that." To wait for the next to say "hey I read a study on this.."
People act like there's a bunch of mentally incompetent people that need babysitting.
The fact is that everyone has access to the same information.
The information we don't all have is information on each other.

If you haven't, try looking at mindplace.com, you might also google neuro feedback.

I have used the Kasina. It helps a little with a CH. When I use it I use a program that is very bright light(like looking into the sun) with very fast pulses and very high frequency audio. Oddly, the relaxation programs make it worse...

I tried to delete this thread, but was only able to delete my post.

I assume that the bullshit comment was about the O2 effecting my vision.
I haven't said anything about this before because I know it sounds like bullshit.
I have researched and not found any other cases, so I would be willing to say that it was coincidence.

About 20 years prior to my O2 incident, my eye had a drop of melted salt splashed onto it and it could be that something related to that surfaced at the same time. Or it could be that the headache itself caused it.
That was a k10+ day and the O2 was just making it rebound harder. Not a day a like to remember.

Unless there was an additive that I didn't know about, it was salt.

The company I worked at would heat it up to 360 degrees and it was liquefied.
We would cure rubberized mats injected into aluminum molds.
The molds were dropped by hydraulics and they failed causing the mold to plummet into the salt tank.
My entire arm was burned, fortunately only a drop got into my eye.
When they treated me at the er, they said that my cornea would heal and I would be fine.

Maybe there was a remnant that never quite healed. Idk.

Vitamin deficiency is from malabsorption. Most commonly due to a microbial imbalance in the gut.
This can be mitigated over time with the use of pre and probitoics and unprocessed food.
read Grain Brain and Brain Maker. Great books.

Inflammation is a very important function of your body. This can go haywire sometimes, but to dampen your body's ability to inflame is a bad idea.

Really? That's all you got from this?

But seriously you're right.
I understand if you have someone close to you that is mentally challenged, or if you are mentally challenged, that can be very offensive.
I should have considered that.

To you my sincerest apology. I really am sorry for that.

edit...
Also I want to say sorry to everyone else that may be offended. I get the serotonin storm and it makes me rude, defensive, offensive and inconsiderate. Just an all around ass.

Thank you and kudos for posting an apology.  Let's move on in a positive direction from here.

Thanks.
