Vitamin A & Magnesium question?
Oct 29th, 2015 at 4:44pm

I'm wondering if I have the wrong vitamin A supplement. The one I have is 10,000iu of Vitamin A from fish liver oil. Is the one listed below the correct one instead, which is from retynil palmitate?

Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

Also, the magnesium I have is oxide. Would it be better for me to get the glycinate instead?

Thanks!!

I Get my vitamin A from my once a day Kirkland Mature Multi, and it's best to get Magnesium Citrate 400-500mg taken once a day with food and the other cofactors.

Hey Melissa,

I'm not sure what you have with the fish liver oil... Some fish liver oil formulations are not well regulated...  Moreover, a little vitamin A (Retinol) is good, but more isn't...  That's why I specified 3000 IU/day as a max...

Retinyl Palmitate is what you need.  If each tablet contains 5,000 IU, Peter is spot on about the dosing  by taking one tablet every other day.

Hoppy is also correct in saying the Mature Multi contains sufficient Vitamin A (retinol) along with the needed zinc, boron, and the seven B vitamins... It just doesn't have sufficient magnesium...

Regarding the magnesium oxide...  If it's Nature Made, that's what I take.  The rationale for the other salts of magnesium has to do with their lower tendency to cause osmotic diarrhea.  As long as this isn't a problem with your magnesium oxide...  you're good to go so keep on trucking...

BTY... Howz the head?

Take care and please keep us posted,

Hiya Mel!

For years now have debated with myself whether to insert myself into this discussion...because overall I think the vitamin regimen has helped OH SO MANY PEOPLE (thanks Batch). But...having experienced cancer and frequenting a treatment facility where everyone there is unfortunately united in one disease type...it's heart-breaking... and I HAVE to point out...because SO MANY clusterheads did or do smoke:

Multiple reliable research agencies (National Cancer Institute for one) have found a link between lung cancer and smokers or ex-smokers who take Vit A supplements. It's odd because original thinking was that it would be protective for smokers...it's not.

Apparently...and there could be all kinds of reasons I can't comprehend....natural sources (fruits and veggies) do not have the same linkage. I don't pretend to be a research analyst and I HIGHLY recommend you do your own research on the web...targeting reliable sources like national cancer
organizations and the Sloan Ketterings of the world. They'll tell you about dosages and types of nutrients far better than I can relate.

Please...this was hard for me to do...and I don't want to discourage a reliable treatment option for clusterheads...but as in all other areas of life...be an INFORMED consumer.

Best

Jon

Thanks everyone for the replies!

Peter510- I have the citrate as well, so I think I'll just keep taking it. Smiley

Batch- After learning lots about vit A today, I think I will skip the supplement as I already eat foods containing vit A daily as it is. As for the head, it could be better. Went into cycle 17 days ago, got my O2 a couple days ago, and started the D3 regimen at the same time. I am not taking the calcium though as extra makes me ill (I get most of it from my diet), and I did try upping the D3 amount one time before, but it made me sick also, so sticking with the 10,000iu for a week to see how I fare. Most of the other vitamins you list I already take regularly, have for years, so it's just adding in the D3, K2, zinc and A. Of course, now that I know about the A, I will forgo it. I take a tsp of honey a day for the boron, and I've done zinc bursts in the past to stave off illness, so it's not much to add into my regimen. So there you have it! Smiley

Jon- totally understand your concern! Don't worry my friend, I'm going to forgo taking it regardless. I get enough A from my diet anyway. Love you brother, hope you are doing well! Smiley

I'll put in my two cents re: magnesium.  I have been doing this for 2.5 years now, and have tried three types--oxide, citrate, and cheleated mag. glycinate. The oxide worked for me until it didn't (turned into a laxative). I have used the citrate version the longest, with no side effects yet.  The glycinate is one of the most expensive, but for me, definitely has the best absorption. My stomach meds can interfere with absorption of nutrients, and getting the magnesium in adequate amounts is vital. So basically, I think you should keep on using what works, and be willing to try other types if the citrate stops working. Anyone on this regimen for the long haul needs to tweak it to their individual needs. Like most things, one size doesn't fit all. Smiley

Melissa, Pattik,

Great posts, interesting topic... and I understand where Jon is coming from...  Too much vitamin A RAE (>10,000 IU/day) can cause problems.  Moreover, the relative risk for cancer between smoking and vitamin A at the suggested doses for the anti-inflammatory regimen is close to 100 to 1...

Regarding vitamin A (retinol) i.e., retinyl palmitate, we only need a little and the max suggested for the anti-inflammatory regimen is in line with the RDA for vitamin D3 at 900 mcg (3,000 IU) for men and 700 mcg (2,333 IU) for women...  This is well below the UL or upper tolerable limit of 10,000 IU/day.

One of the best and most authoritative sources of information on vitamins and micronutrients is the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University at the following link:

Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

As you read through this link as I have, you'll see several important reasons why we need the listed RDA for vitamin A (retinol).  In researching the role of vitamin A (retinol) in the anti-inflammatory regimen, it appears, vitamin A (retinol) plays a major role in the enabling genetic expression that prevents CH as you'll see in the following graphic...

Bottom line, if you're taking the Mature Multi as many of us do, you're getting sufficient vitamin A (retinol)...  If not, eat a sweet potato a week and you'll be good to go...

Take care,

Batch, not to be a nitpicker, but can I make a suggestion? Perhaps make a notation in the chart you have posted for the D3 regimen that the vitamin A, and boron even, can be met just taking a multivit, or through diet. That way if someone misses something you've wrote about the vitamins, and they only reference the chart when they go to shop for them, that they don't end up taking too much of certain ones.

Just a suggestion! And thank you very much for all your help. I only had 1 attack last night instead of three, so we'll see what happens with tonight. My shadows are going down as well, so this might be working, but it's only been one night/morning, so we shall see.

I will keep you updated!

Melissa,

Thanks for the update and good suggestion.  I thought the photo below of the nutrients I take and in the following link that contains an explanation that most of the vitamin D3 cofactors are included in the Mature Multi, would be sufficient...

However, in the interest of clarity and to ensure CH'ers get the correct amounts of the micronutrients in the anti-inflammatory regimen, I've updated the link above with the following table of supplements needed to make this regimen an effective CH preventative.

Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

I'm hesitant to make a statement that many of the micronutrients in this regimen can be obtained from dietary sources for a few reasons.  The first reason deals with commercially produced vegetables that may be grown from genetically modified organism (GMO) seeds.  Studies have shown GMO grains and veggies have lower amounts of the essential micronutrients than their heirloom counterparts.

Commercially grown veggies tend to be grown year after year on the same plot.  This practice leaches the essential plant nutrients from the soil reducing the nutrient content in crops grown in the following seasons.

Finally, there's no way to ensure CH'ers will experience the maximum CH preventative benefits from this regimen if they mix and match the suggested micronutrients and attempt to take them from dietary sources.

That said, if you're a discriminating food shopper who buys veggies and fruits from local farms and farmer's markets or you grow some of your own veggies and fruits, the following link at the Linus Pauling Institute Micronutrient Center at Oregon State University is a good source of information on micronutrients obtained from dietary sources.

I'll be sending DJ a new page on the vitamin D3 anti-inflamatory regimen to add to the quick links at the left of each CH.com web page next to oxygen info.

Take care and thanks again for the suggestion.

Batch- Thank you so much! The chart is MUCH easier to understand now, at least it is for me. I hope this helps someone else as well, who is confused as I was, lol.

Thanks again, and take care!
