Cannabidiol Transdermal Patch Experience
Aug 13th, 2014 at 11:06pm

I am 63 yrs old. I have dealt with cluster headaches since Oct of 1996. My younger brother has had them since 1973. His last series was 8 years ago. When I started having mine, he an I had them at virtually the same time, even though he was living in Missouri and I was in TX.  I have been through trials of the following drugs recommended by CH specialists in the last 18 years.
Amitriptyline
Cafergot
Hydrocodone
Imitrex
Lithium Carb
Methlypred
Oxygen
Percocet
Phenylpropanolamine
Prednisolone
Relafen
Sumatriptan
Topamax
Verapamil
Zomig

Until last week I was using Oxygen as my primary controller of the CH after a series began, then using Imitrex Nasal, Zomig Nasal or Sumatriptan Nasal when the intensity worsened. I usually get one mild #5 on your pain scale the first week, 2 or 3 the second week at 6 or 7 on the pain scale and by the 3rd week I will have 3 or 4 a day for up to 3 weeks then they start to back down. During the 3rd week the CH pain level is 8 to 10. A lot of head banging going on with 2 or 3 imitrex or similar a day. Way over the prescribed amount. I am useless during this time.
Two weeks ago I started a series, but it came on stronger and faster. At the end of the first week I was having as many as 3 or 4 a day. The tension in the right side of my neck and the tingling around my right eye was always present. I was using an E cylinder of oxygen with the regulator set at 12 a day. I was using 2 Imitrex a day. I was exhausted. The pain level was always between 7 & 10. My insurance would not allow me more than 6 doses of Imitrex a month and I was running out of my accumulated supply.
I went to a medical marijuana dispensary in Colorado. They had a product called
"MARY'S MEDICINALS...TRANSDERMAL PATCH...CBD...10MG
It is a 12hr patch that I placed on my wrist. I put it on at 10pm. My most serious CH starts at 1:30am daily.
I awoke at 1:30am and to my suprise, I could tell I was having a CH but the pain was so mild I decided not to use any oxygen of meds. I slept 'till 9am the next morning. The first good nights sleep in almost 2 weeks. I did not have another headache for 3 days then they started to come back, but less severe and less frequently. I was able to control any attack with oxygen and the ch would go away within 12 minutes.
I returned to the dispensary and purchased 2 more patches. I used the next patch on August the 6th. I have had only 2 CH's since. Both treated with 12minutes of oxygen. No headaches the last 4 days.
I have had no side effects from the CBD patch. It has almost no THC, so no psych reactions...no halucinations...no paranoya. Just sleeping well and feeling rested.
Will keep you updated.

That's great news, 4 days painfree is pretty good. Only a small percentage of sufferers who have tried cannabis have reported any relief. I suggest that you check out batch's post on the "medications, treatments & therapies" section "123 days pain free and I think I know why " it much less expensive and 80% of sufferer's that have tried it experience a reduction in the frequency, intensity and duration of their CH. 60% have reported completely pain free. Give it a try and best of luck to you!

Most marijuana is high THC, and has little or no CBD. These are two very different molecules. CBD acts on the serotonin receptors, while THC does not.

I do not know if CBD helps with clusters, but there is a rationale to suggest it might (even if we accept the idea that THC and most marijuana on the street does not help). The standard wisdom that all cannabis does nothing useful or triggers should be re-examined. The high THC strains need to be considered separately from the high CBD strains - they are two different medicines.

I've been there and done that. Personally I agree with" standard wizdom" it's more of a trigger ( especially if too much is taken) than a preventative or abortive. If you have a card and access to a dispensary so that you know the percentage of the THC and CBD's present in the in the medical cannabis  then good luck and post your results.
