acute bacterial brain infection?
Dec 11th, 2012 at 11:54am

went to ER yesterday and they told me i have an acute bacterial brain infection i also have a cyst developing slightly left om my spine right under my skull. they gave me several hours of IV antibiotics and told me follow up with my neurologist. Could this be the cause of my CH?

WOW! I have no idea if this is related at all to your CH but it's an excellent example of why we always push for headache specialist neuros. So much goes on inside the noggin we're always afraid of helping people mask something serious like this with our well meaning attempts to ease pain.

Keeping you in our thoughts and prayers while you battle this mess. If taking care of this kills CH beasty too, well AWESOME!

I h known about the cyst for a month when I first felt it and started having the pain. I have had a infection growing before when I was 11 and had to have emergency surgery and have one of my tonsils and my adenoids removed. I just know that's what the had diagnosed me with and gave me several hours of  antibiotics.and told me follow up with my neuro. and if u have any stiffness or numbness come back immediately.

So what you're saying is that you may have a condition that mimics CH.

I hope you get to feeling better. Wouldn't it be great if they were able to treat the infection and cyst and your pain would go away?

What they said.  I can't add anything to Joe, Don, and Bill have said, except I'm praying for you and I'm praying that this will clear up what appears to be CH for you.  That would be great!  What a Christmas present that would be!

Im not a doctor...but an acute, bacterial infection in the brain sounds PRETTY damn serious to me.  Life threatening even.  Im so surprised they let you leave and see a neuo at a later time.

it is very serious. i had it before when i was 11 and was sent home from the same ER 3 times in the same day before the gave me amoxacillin which i am highly allergic to even with the allergy alert band and had to get transfered to Fairfax hospital where i was rushed into emergency surgery and was in ICU for 3 weeks the told my mom i had a 50/50 chance making it then. im not a doctor myself all i know is that is what the told me after being in there for around 18hours and told me to follow up. idk whats going on. as far as the cyst, well anyone can feel it.

Lydia,   We don't know you but if you have cluster headaches, then you are a part of this family and we care about each other here.  Not just with CH..but for everything we all go through on a daily basis.

Sometimes, as Joe pointed out..a newcomer will find this site and want to know if we old-timers think they have CH and we always tell them to please try and find a knowledgable doctor and get an MRI to rule out the possibility of something more sinister.  We don't do that to scare anyone, but there ARE conditions which can and DO mimic CH.

No one is trying to scare you.  I just can't believe that doctors diagnosed you with this and let you go home.  If I was in your place..I would have insisted on being admitted.  The brain is NOT something to mess around with and of course you know that.

I hope whoever you see on Friday will fall over back-wards taking tests and making certain you are treated properly.  Please let us know what he/she says.

Linda

Im not an expert, but i do not believe neither of those tests can determine a bacterial infection but i could be wrong.  I once WAS wrong, but i was mistaken.  Happy to hear you are seeing the bestin your area.   I love your town, btw.

That's great, Lydia, because CH or not it will increase knowlege and awareness within our little community and perhaps allow us to help other people also, which is why many of us are here.

Stay well, stay in touch, and kiss the baby for us.

We care.

Hi everyone. sorry for the delay. Ive been checking in on my cell and i hate replying on it. I went to my doctor, i'm off antibiotics now. The cyst or what they believe to be a cyst is still there. i'm being sent for MRI of (what he wrote on order) c-spine MRI w & w/o contrast. and some blood work cbc, cmp, tsh, b12, vitamin D. They are also believing i also have or developing TN as well as clusters. they did 6 nerve blocks as well and since all medications have really not had any effects on me he has me on Baclofen and upped my dose of dilaudid to 4mg<- i no most dont think it doesnt help them but its one of the few things that actually get me somewhat in control. so far the nerve block seems to be helping 3 days PF. sorry again for the wait.
