Clusters and Uveitis
Nov 15th, 2012 at 6:14am

Hi guys, back again after an "almost" pain free summer.  I have, however, had Uveitis, a painful inflamation of the eye for 4 months and now the Clusters are kicking back in (typical!).  Just wondered if anyone else had problems with Uveitis?

Its on the same side as the Clusters and causes red eye, tearing, sensitivity to light and acute pain in the side of the head.  Sound familiar?  Drs cant find a connection to the Cluster and I had a blood test and there are no inflamatory indicators in my blood either (ie rheumatism).  Its definitely separate as there are "cells" in my eye that can be seen by Opthamologist.  Also the treatment is prednisolone in eye drop form.

Both my local GP and hospital dont seem to think there is a link but has anyone else come across this before?

PS Have been on D3 regime since March time.

Did an archive search these are the only two references I could find, the first one was from 2009 the second is from 2002 more related to an overdose of prednisone causing issues:

2009 posting:

It has been awhile since I posted, and though lots have changed (finished from Graduate School!) I want to keep this post to a medical type question...

Although I was diagnosed with CH awhile back my wife and I are having some doubts.

A little history is in order.

When my life with CH first started I lost weight...50 pounds in four months! At first we thought I was having thyroid problems, which plague my family and I thought it was just my time (not joke--all of my five siblings, my father, his siblings, and his father have had to have their thyroids' removed because of Greys disease). It turned out my thyroid wasn't the problem, and we started watching my stomach.  I have had trouble with my stomach and bowels for as long as I can remember and thought that might be it. All of this went by the way side when the CH started and up until a month ago we didn't give another thought.

Anyway, about a month ago I started losing weight again (15 pounds in four weeks--during the holidays no less) and sure enough another "never-ending cycle" started. A week ago an ER doctor (yep--I had to go to the ER to try and get some relief from the devil--something I am not proud of) told me that there is a excellent possibility I have Crohn's disease.

My wife began the due diligence, and discovered that one of the Extraintestinal symptoms is Uveitis. While I don't think that anyone can mistake the pain of a CH, I am wondering if there is a connection here.

What I asking is if anyone here has Crohn's and Clusters, or am I just being nuts in thinking there is a connection here?

Thanks all--I hope the New Year is as Devil Free for All of Us.

2002 posting:

Title: prednisone
Post by claudiamoore on May 30th, 2002, 8:25am
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I took 16,000 millagrams of prednisone through a wrong prescription. I took it orally in January 2001 over a 14 day period.  Since then I have had postier uveitis, floaters flashers, macular puckers in both eyes, 6 retina tears and holes (laser repaired), and now my disc to cup ratio is 7. Necular medicine showed damage in every area of my body. Blood in my urine. I feel this all has to do with the massive dose of steroids. I have cushing syndrom. No one in my town knows what to do or much about steroids induced ocular problems. Is this something anyone can help me with? Any steriod experts?  I took more prednisone than has ever been taken in history.  Any suggestions?

Thanks for the info.  It is quite interesting, especially the pred overdose.  I tried Prednisolone earlier this year as an abortive and had a terrible reaction to it.  Very scary.  Also the pain involved in the uveitis and clusters is very similar although confined totally to the eye itself in Uveitis.  I can only assume that the same "issues " that cause the pain are alike in both cases. Back at Drs next week and Neurologist next month so will have a chat with both of them as well as eye specialist.

I've heard the study of the brain being compared to 10 blind men all describing an elephant by the area they are touching! Grin There's just so much they have no idea on. Good luck with the appointments.
