ADVICE
Sep 24th, 2012 at 12:55pm

I have noticed how too many people here love to give advice on what to take, how to take,etc...whenever i have chimed in...i would "ONLY" give advice if i have tried this or that (not what i have read) but what i have experienced with...there have been many subjects, where i could have jumped in,but someone else on the thread already wrote (what i what of) so i move on...as i am not trying to rack up points  Grin Grin Grin Grin...i was at the conference this past weekend and will give you a few examples

1)... a gentleman spoke of how a very dear friend of his knew that he uses 02 for his attacks...was having a very bad headache and asked him if he could come by and try it...he made it to his house and received the 02 and it worked real well (all good, pain away) was doing his friend a big favor (and i would of done the same)...later on he found out that his friend had a major stroke...this guy is a very hard headed man (reminds me of me  Shocked Shocked Shocked) which does scare me  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy...but with a very big heart...i had the honor of speaking with him a few times...and it hurt me very much to hear of how he is blaming himself for what happened to his friend  Cry Cry Cry...i gave a very good friend in 92 some advice, that has haunted me to this day

2)...Yesterday in the a.m....i bumped into this young lady (another clusterhead) she mentioned to me,that she had a terrible night (attacks) and i asked her "why didn't you use some trex"...she starts to tell me that trex will give you rebounds (i'm listening to her speech, till she stops) and then i asked her "how do you do the trex"...turns out she has never tried the injection and here she is giving me advice...WTF...suppose,i am new and never tried trex, after listening to what she had to say about it,i would of never tried it...turns out, that's what happened to her...pretty scary indeed...

i just don't get it...none of us are doctors and half of us are talking from the side of our neck...i am sure you can see of where i am going with this...PLEASE,think 2 or 3 time's before you let your fingers do the talking...As You Might Take A Life or Ruin One.....Lenny

I agree with both the hesitancy to give medical advice, and handing out prescription meds, including oxygen, without a doctors consent.

That being said, with the complete lack of knowledge most general practioners and even many neuros have about CH, it's critical we continue to provide the information on treatment options. Whether it's advising them to ask about Lithium Verapamil, Topomax as prevents, imitrex, stadol, oxygen etc as abortives, it is always my intent to educate the CH'er enough to be able to go back to his/her doc and demand they be allowed to try the high percentage meds. There are too many effective treatment options available to still see people just grinding thru 90 minute attacks like we did in the 70's and 80's.

The horror stories come when people give their prescription meds to a sufferer without a doctors blessing....then you're playing doctor and risking serious problems.

Joe's 2 cents!

All advice here is assumed to be qualified as just that, advice. Nobody here is trying to take the place of a trained physician, and I'm pretty sure none of us are giving advice and claiming that it will work. Nobody who knows anything about cluster could ever make that kind of assertion.
If I feel a person may be in the dark about a certain type of treatment I tell them as it could be the thing that brings them the first relief they have had in months or years. Conversely, I am always scanning the forums for the different types of treatments people are taking, because I know that there may come a day when the system I am using now stops working and I need to start looking at alternatives.
I do agree that nobody here needs to be prescribing any sort of treatment for others, especially those who could be confused or desperate. However, people need to realize this is merely a resource, not a substitute for trained practitioner. You should run anything you read here by your doctor before you go out and start putting drugs into your body.

Merely a resource and not a substitute for a trained practitioner?  Maybe for you, but without this website I would've been dead 100X times over! Cry

If you are EXTREMELY lucky to have an educated doctor about CH's, then this is good advice.  Otherwise, I would personally recommend you sitting face to face with your doctor and making sure their ears are wide open and they listen to you, the patient, about what your CH needs are.  If they are not willing to listen to you, fire them and don;t walk away, RUN out of their office!

We CH'ers do not often meet doctors who know how to effectively treat us.  On the contrary, we often have to be the more educated of the two (doctor/patient) and must self advocate advising the doctor what treatment we as patients believe is best for controlling the beast.

My CH's started at age 11 and was mis-diagnosed my entire childhood, teenage and college years.  Then I self diagnosed, after 20 yrs of torture by the dragon, thanks to this website. Wink

Since then, every treatment I chose to use (abortive, transitional and preventive) have ALL been at MY suggestions based on info I have learned HERE at Ch.com.  Some cycles I have been under the guidance of medical professionals and other cycles I have provided my own treatment by any means necessary.

I have personally educated several neurologists and would gladly challenge ANY headache specialist how to effective treat a CH'er.  I honestly believe it would be a safe bet I would beat MOST doctors on this test of knowledge.  So for someone/anyone to suggest running your ideas of treatment past your doctor 1st for professionalism, I don't necessarily agree as I have a high disrespect of the medical community when it comes to CH's.

At the ClusterBuster conference last weekend, many of us CH'ers listened to a speech by a guy who could endure a KIP 8 and continue being the MC on a live radio show interview without stopping or using abortives.  While other CH'ers can not endure a KIP 2 without the need of an abortive.

Pain is relevant to the individual as we all have our own individual tolerance and patience levels; and beliefs of how we must self advocate or choose to barely survive as a guinea pig mis-diagnosed with poor treatment recommendations by uneducated people who happen to possess an MD. Bottom Line is...."to each his own!" Wink
