Getting headache from shampoo - ingredients listed
Jul 14th, 2012 at 3:34pm

I know this is a weird one but I just started using a new organic shampoo and it gives me a headache after using it. It feels like a bad sinus headache that must be from an allergic reaction to one of the ingredients. Are any of these ingredients known headache triggers?

Purified water, sodium cocoyl isethionate (derived from coconut), cocamidopropyl betaine (derived from coconut), tea tree oil*, argan oil**, black seed (kanoji) oil, amla oil, nettle extract, biotin, saw palmetto, cedarwood oil, rosemary oil*, sage extract, he shou wu (fo-ti), hibiscus oil, pygeum extract, pumpkin seed oil, green tea extract, zinc, soy isoflavones, beta sitosterols, aloe vera**, niacin, vitamin E, B-vitamin complex, phenoxyethanol (mild preservative), grapefruit seed extract (natural preservative), lactic acid (naturally occurring in yogurt), & dead sea salt.

Sometimes just the smell of certain things cant trigger a headache for me. As in bleach or gasoline. Maybe that is the case. Just the smell of the shampoo itself.

Yes, I have been diagnosed with cluster headaches. Mainly just looking for some insight on the ingredients. Please let me know if I could get more help somewhere else. Thanks.

I'm by no means a doctor or a chemist,  Smiley  (my disclaimer)...but none of the ingredients in that shampoo have popped up here as a regular trigger. As Bonnie said, many of us are sensitive to certain smells while in cycle, my guess is the smell is a more likely trigger then the chemicals themselves.

Either way, if it consistently seems to bring on attacks, I'd just include it on your current triggers list. Stick around, keep reading and asking questions, we'll help you any way we can.

Easy solution, if you think it is likely to bring on a CH just get some different shampoo.

I too would go with Joe's suggestion that it could be just down to the scent.
