New here, and looking for advice

Hello all,
The beast first visited me in December and stayed with me for 3 long weeks. It was pain I had never experienced, a pain that made my kidney stones feel like stubbed toes. After 4 trips to the emergency room in a matter of a week, and diagnoses of occular migraines, I was finally referred to a neurologist. By that time my eye was so swollen I could barely see, I was sleep deprived, and just overall exhausted. When he finally gave the beast a name, I felt relief wash over me! I was cured! This was going to go away... but, as you all know, I was wrong.I was put on 360mg of Verapamil a day, given the magic nasal spray and the Sumavel injectibles. Nothing happened overnight, but eventually I no longer wanted to perform my own lobotomy. However, for weeks after, I would get little pinches everyday for just a few seconds, almost as if the beast was reminding me that it  could cripple me whenever it felt like it. My eye would get hazy at times, and it took a few days for it to get back to normal. Finally around Valentines Day, I was symptom free! Well, a tension headache here, and still the occasional pinch, but nothing that could be considered more than annoying. Until today. I was at work when I felt the throbbing start behind my eye, the same eye as last time. I tried brushing it off, drinking a red bull, but it just kept getting stronger, and stronger. I was able to finish my shift, but since I've been home, my eyelid has already started to droop again, and my eye is bloodshot red. Im agitated, the light is bothering me, and the pain is coming again. Ive started the verapamil again, and have the sumavel shots. I guess Im wondering if this warrants another visit to my neurologist? Ive still got more than 100 verapamils left. Ive tried to dig through some of the posts, but how do some of you cope when you know that the cycle is about to start again? When I try to talk to my friends and family they dont really understand, and say things like, "I get migraines too, or my aunt's migraines are real bad too." I'm hoping that among you there is someone who will read this and know exactly what Im going through.

This isn't the question you asked, but I found your wording a bit curious. Do you mean to say you are using verapamil as an abortive? It takes time for verapamil to build up in your system and become effective. If you mean you started verapamil while on cycle, and then stopped taking it, you might talk with your doc about an extended period of time since the CHs came back as they did. And if you haven't already done so, read the O2 link at the left. Coupled with an energy drink, it is an excellent front line abortive technique. God bless. lance

Hi Elle

Sadly I fear there aint many on here who totally understand what you're gouing through, though we all have our own quirks and different approaches seem to work for different individuals.
The one commonly responded to abortive is the good old O2, check the link to the left. I've found it a godsend, but I've also been lucky with my neuro / headache specialist, who seems to have his finger on the pulse now.
Bottom line is read all you can, get a good specialist and get on the O2!!
May your days be PF

Best Regards Andrew
