STOP PIPA and SOPA

wikipedia.org is temporarily shut down because of this

Imagine a World
Without Free Knowledge

For over a decade, we have spent millions of hours building the largest encyclopedia in human history. Right now, the U.S. Congress is considering legislation that could fatally damage the free and open internet. For 24 hours, to raise awareness, we are blacking out Wikipedia. Learn more.

Corporate supporters of Senate 968 (PIPA) and HR 3261 (SOPA) demand the ability to take down any web site (including craigslist, Wikipedia, or Google) that hurts their profits -- without prior judicial oversight or due process -- in the name of combating "online piracy."

PIPA and SOPA authors and supporters insist they'd only go after foreign piracy sites, but Internet Engineers understand this is an attempt to impose "Big Brother" controls on our Internet, complete with DNS hijacking and censoring search results. Incredibly, many Congress Members favor this idea.

They better not take down "The People of Walmart" website. That would really piss me off.

Millions of Americans oppose SOPA and PIPA because these bills would censor the Internet and slow economic growth in the U.S.

Two bills before Congress, known as the Protect IP Act (PIPA) in the Senate and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the House, would censor the Web and impose harmful regulations on American business. Millions of Internet users and entrepreneurs already oppose SOPA and PIPA.

The Senate will begin voting on January 24th. Please let them know how you feel. Sign this petition urging Congress to vote NO on PIPA and SOPA before it is too late.

I tend to agree....these two bills could change the net as we know it and should be voted down.

Ellen says that if SOPA/PIPA is killed, Congress will probably reintroduce it as the "Anti-Flag-Burning-True-American-Freedom-Fighting-Patriotic Bill of Awesomeness".

OPEN ready to take on SOPA in Congress

Piracy legislation opponents ready alternative amid web protests

Jan. 18, 2012, 3:48 p.m. EST

By Robert Schroeder

WASHINGTON -- Lawmakers opposed to the Internet anti-piracy legislation known as SOPA and PIPA said Wednesday they are preparing to introduce an alternative bill as as soon as possible that they say takes a more-targeted approach to combating piracy and protects free speech.

...

On Wednesday, the sponsor of the SOPA bill said he was still planning action on the bill next month.

But lawmakers’ reservations about the bill appeared to be growing.

House Speaker John Boehner, an Ohio Republican, said the SOPA bill wasn’t ready for a vote. Lawmakers including Sen. Marco Rubio, a Florida Republican who had previously co-sponsored his chamber’s PIPA bill, were expressing hesitation on Wednesday.

...

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, meanwhile, has said he will bring the PIPA bill to a vote next week.

Objectives seem hard to target, these proposals are like area bombing.  Too many hurt and the problem still persists.
