Melatonin, slight warning.
Jul 16th, 2010 at 9:56am

If you currently use it or are curious about it, make sure that in the ingredients it says "melatonin".  There are a few things out there labeled "melatonin" that do not actually contain melatonin - thus making them ineffective in helping you sleep through the night without getting hit.  Trust me, I have unfortunately done the research for you.  So it is possible that people who have tried it before, may have gotten some of the "bunk" stuff and that's why it didn't work.  Just passing along some useful info.

Thomas,

Thanks for the heads-up.  This is disturbing news!

Are you aware of any particular brand names or suppliers that are trying to pull this on unsuspecting customers?

Thanks,
Jim

I've gotten rid of the fake stuff here, but for some reason, "sundown naturals" comes to mind.

It will say in the ingredients "melatonin as (insert chemical formula here).

The true chemical formula for melatonin is N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine.

thomas.

This is my wife's profile.  sorry.

What if it says:

Melatonin   3mg
(as n-Acetyl-5-Methoxytryptamine)

Based on what you reported above, I'd have to say I have the right stuff. Do you agree?

I would have to agree.  Now the magic question is, does it work?

Was working for months. Until last night.

Time to dose again. I haven't had to for two months now.

Ouch, sorry to hear that.  I've been taking melatonin now nightly for the last two years,(my previous 8 years it was just while in cycle) my last CH was in Feb of 09.  Keeping my fingers crossed for you and me both.  I find sometimes changing brands will help, why I do not know, but sometimes a brand will let me down and I'll switch and have success again.

Oh no. I hope it wasn't due to that bottle of pills that you won in the auction. Wink

Thanks, Thomas.  I've always bought CVS brand 3mg, which was fine.  They came out with a 5mg and I switched to that, but they never made me feel a bit sleepy, even up to 25mg.   The old three mg tablets had said:
Quote:
N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine

The 5mg tablets do not.

Nearby their own brand on the shelf is:
Quote:
"sundown naturals"

It also only says melatonin, not the chemical formula.

I threw out the 5mg bunk and bought the 3's again.  Thanks for the heads-up.       Smiley

And adding here, I bought the 3mg CVS brand melatonin but noticed the shape of the tablet has been changed from thin to thick.  When I tried them, nothing.  I might suspect they too have been reformulated without melatonin, but leftover containers with the chemical name on them are presently still being used, and so would not recommend this type either.

Rite Aid's brand seems to work ok.  The label on back only says melatonin and doesn't give the chemical formula, but above the supplement facts is noted: potency verified by NMI procedures.

I have to switch brands every once in a while, and I don't really know why.  But it does seem to help.
