I stopped my CHs in their tracks, no drugs, no oxy
May 30th, 2010 at 1:26am

I went to the hospital a month ago to see what what going on in my head.  The CT scan proved clean.  However, my onesided headaches that happen late in the evening were diagnosed as Cluster Headaches.  I was offered a host of drug alternatives to which I refused all.   I am a pharmacist and I see what these drugs do to people.  It isn't pretty and I wanted nothing to do with it.  I decided I would just tough it out and hope that they would stop.
After suffering for a few nights, and in the middle of a doozie, I thought that headaches are usually from not enough blood or too much blood in parts of the brain.  I would try a cure for too little blood.  I did a head stand.  I did it for about a minute and upon rising, the headache was gone.  I have stopped 20 headaches so far and they seem to be coming with less frequency and acuity.  (Yet 5 minutes ago I was upside down again because of a rather riping one.....gone)
I decided to post, not as a professional, but as a sufferer who is thrilled that I have control of these devils with a simple head stand.   I just do a frog stand with my knees on my elbows and then move my head down to the ground and lift my legs up until I am straight up.  Getting the legs up builds enough pressure to do the job.  I tried laying on my bed, stomach down, with my head down to the floor.  It worked, but only for a few minutes.  I find that I need to do the full up headstand to make it work.   Rarely do they come back that same day.  Maybe once.
I hope that someone finds the relief that I have found.  I feel in control and don't worry about when the next knife in the right side of my head is thrust upon me.  I have an answer that has worked for me EVERY TIME.  Bless you who have had these for years.  I don't know how you have done it as my journey has been a short one.

Hi Rich,

Thanks for the tip. Good of you to share it with us. Glad you found something so simple that's so effective against your headaches - and no drugs to boot! For others who might like to try the same but who for one reason or another are unable, inversion tables have become relatively inexpensive and might be worth a shot. We have one at home that my son tried for his HAs but it didn't work for him. Didn't hurt for him to try it though and it might just as easily have worked.

Ron

p.s. - Welcome to the forum. I for one hope you stay. I bet a lot of folks here would have questions for a Pharmacist. I'm starting my list now.

My first post was a doozy,  as I recall I extolled the virtues of lying in a hammock and swinging gently back and forth.  I was so sure it worked I even argued with jonny about it.  Then I realized the error of my ways and took the advice of so many here,  got oxygen and have been pushing it ever since.  Oxygen works.

To the newbies reading this and similar posts. This month alone we have seen the following suggestions to cure your CH:

1:Blow your nose, snort Afrin and take an antibiotic.

2: Use the power of positive thinking to abort an attack or a complete cycle

3:Take 2 excederin, go to a dark quiet place and meditate the attack away.

4: Go to a chiropractor

And now this post. I get concerned because what all of these promise is an instant quick fix to what is in reality a lifelong problem, that for the most, part defies any attempts at quick fixes.

There are a number of highly succesful routes to try, such as oxygen, imitrex, zomig and energy drinks, as abortives. Verapamil, Lithium and Topomax as prevents. There is the "alternative" site which is having phenomenal success. Clusterbusters.com

With all of these proven methods available, I worry a new person could be seduced into wasting time trying all of these "quick cures," only to find themself at the beginning of the treatment road all over again.

The people who have found success with some of these unusual methods, my hats off to you. I hope you stay pain free for life, it is the goal of all on this board. To people new to this site, there is not a quick fix solution to this condition. But there are many proven methods of treating it. I would encourage you to investigate those.

Joe

I apologize to the sensitive, open minded folk on this blog.  It was totally inappropriate for me to offer to others a solution that has worked for me 100% of the time.  I can see that this is offensive and is immediately classed with those who feel that painting a bat's wings purple will cure the cluster headache.
I also agree that it is far more practical to spend thousands of dollars on medications like Topamax, Lithium, Imitrex, Percocet and even strapping an oxygen bottle to your hip for life than to take 60 seconds and try something that worked for another that costs nothing.  Please continue to warn people against following suggestions as mine.
Good bye clusterheadaches.com.  I am clearly not needed and frankly, ....I guess that I have no need to visit as MY HEADACHES have been conquered.

Carry on!  Rich

Rich, the Pharmacist, I wish you so more many happy days standing on your head.  if this is what helped you, I am glad.  Surely you must have known your um...uh...sorry, I don't know what to call it...would have provoked a response.   You got it.

May you have no more pain-filled days.  I truly mean that.

I cant help but see the irony in a pharmacist who's against meds. lol. No offense, its just ironic.

I think anything is worth a fair try, but there is danger in forever searching for a mystery cure, as Joe stated.

I know it took me quite a while to accept that this wasn't some temporary issue, and that there was no "Fix". I'm a "fixer" for sure, and the information on the internet can help lead you in circles if you just search in vain.

Then there's places like this where you can read from, and talk with people who suffer from the same thing, and learn what works for them. As a bonus, CH.com is loaded with easy to find info.

Its obvious that its a sensitive topic, and were all likely to be stressed out and irritable at times. Luckily CH has made us all tough as nails, so hostile sarcasm isn't a problem. lol

Unfortunately Rich, I'm afraid you'll find that CH will find another way to get at you in the future. You've been effected for a month or so, which means your 'Cluster' could be coming to an end. What kills your CH's, or Appears to kill them, at the end of a cluster, may not work at the begging, middle, or next cluster.

Its just the nature of the beast.

Even if a head-stand is an effective remedy for some, its not possible or practical in every case.

Rich,

Maybe you missed the text at the very top of the homepage of this site.  It says "This site is devoted completely and exclusively to those that suffer from, and to the supporters of those who suffer from Cluster Headaches"

Sorry you got your feelings hurt here by telling us how you stand on your head to get rid of your "headache".

This is what we deal with... Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

When you can get rid of one of these by standing on your fuckin' head, you come back and see us.  We'll ALL apologize to you for thinking you're full of shit.

I'm sincerely glad you found something that works for your pain 100% of the time.  Unfortunately for us, the pain you have isn't a cluster headache so your "answer" doesn't do much for us.

Hopefully this guy was for real. Hard to tell.   I was gonna post this  last week but didn't.

Similar to pharmacist...   felt cluster coming on.  Went to window air conditioner to suck some air. The AC is about thigh high.  I had my head down almost to my knees, i was standing on my feet.  When i raised my head, i was dizzy, also had that headrush feeling.  Went to a doorway to hold myself up.  I noticed pain was better.

Pain got worse.... Back to window air.  The sensation of "no pain" was best when I raised my head from my knees.  I did this cycle several times......  I would breath real fast thru my nose, and exhale thru my mouth. i say i did this for 3 minute cycles.

I was in the least pain right after standing up straight..... I will try headstand.

So what you're saying is that you had four separate variables all going on at the same time:

1. Breathing lower temperature air

2. Head at or below knees

3. Change in breathing pattern (in thru the nose, out thru the mouth)

4. The passage of time

Hardly a controlled experiment. I usually try to limit the variables in my experiments to one each time. But go ahead - see if you can stand on your head next hit. More power to you.

Please don't mistake what hit the raw nerve here. There are numerous "emergency" measures we discuss all the time for when you're caught un prepared for a hit. They include, hyper ventilating, vigorous physical activity, sucking ice cold air either with your head in a freezer, (no joke), or directly in  front of an air conditioner register...automotive is best as the air is really cold....ice cold or really hot showers......the list is very long. All are emergency solutions but are absolutely NOT a cure, nor would we ever preach them as front line attacks on CH

Hope this clears it up a bit! Wink

Who ever is in their cycle right now stand on your fucking head!  Tell us if it works.  Instead of jumping on this dude, try the headstand, god knows we try everything else one time or another.

I am not saying run around the world saying you have been cured, but it would beat stuffing my head in the freezer or sprinting around the neighborhood at 3am.

Maybe we shouldn't always beat these guys up before we try it.  No cost and there are thousands of us on this site.  Some of us probably like standing on our heads.  So try it, what's to lose and who cares. Smiley

I know this will illicit a million responses, so I am bracing for impact Cheesy, but this is not directed at anyone.

--Shaggy, the head stander (not really, but someone should to see if it works) Wink.

ps, hesitating hitting the 'post' button, hesitating, know this will result in a lot of crazy, ok here it goes...be gentle Undecided do some froggy head stands Kiss

You're more than welcome to try it, of course.  Just as others are more than welcome to comment on just how goofy and misguided standing on one's head to "cure" their CH truly is.

whilst I acknowledge that that your post was with the best intentions and the only time you used the word " cure " in the line...I would try a cure for too little blood. This whole head stand thing and the theory behind it seem fundamentally flawed .

CH attacks, or at least the cause of the pain, is due to the swelling of blood vessels in the brain crushing nerves around them ( that's how I understand it from all I have read on the subject from countless medical papers on the net and posts on this board ) . and I guess that is why all the main abortive drugs and O2 are used a vascular constrictors to shrink the blood vessels and stop the pain.

So as you can see people on this board are going to be some what sceptical about a treatment method that would actually increase the blood pressure in the brain . and the way I see it that would only make it a thousand times worse.

I think if I tried to stand on my head during a cluster attack the end result would be a whole lot more pain and probably a broken neck .  Grin

If this works for you then that's cool, but that being the case it doesn't sound much like you have CH , may be you've been miss diagnosed ?

Regards

Nigel
