My god this is me in black and white. My neurologist wont listen to me. He says they are migrains. I know people who have migrains and their pain is no where close to mine.  It feels like my eye swells and starts to water badly. Then it starts flinching and i start to get a warm sensation in the eye nasal and temple area on the right side of the head. There is no specfic time when they occur but i have identified many triggers to the ones i have.  Some of these include adrenaline or increased heart rate, sexual activity, certain smells, sometimes light or glare, definitely alcohol use and smoke of any kind, not enough or to much sleep.  I have been shot i have been stitched up i have hyper extended the ligaments in my knee. All this added together does not add up to the pain i suffer when i have headaches. Its like someone is holding a lit lighter over the ride side of my face burning the hell out of me.  The pain is super intense driving me practically in sane.  Most times i ask god for mercy and beg him to please make it stop. The only thing that i have found that really works for me when the demon decides to strike again is the access and use of very cold water.  I go to the bath room, strip my self down and begin pouring cold water over my head as fast as possible. This causes me to get extremely cold and causes a lot of fast heavy breathing from the shock of the coldness.  I tell u what . I would rather have a little brain freeze head ache than to suffer the heat and chronic pain of this thing that just devours me in every way.  I dont wish this kind of pain on no one. And for those of you that know what im talking about i feel extremely sorry and bad for  you. I know what this is for sure and is the worst thing that could ever happen to a person. They call them suicide head aches for a reason.  All try the cold water and see if it helps. Plz stop banging your head for those of you that do this really isnt helping either.  Thank you shawn Cry Cry Cry Cry Cry Cry Cry Cry Cry Cry Cry

Hi Shawn.  Yep, I believe most of us here know what you are talking about.  My clusters of that magnitude are very rare now, but I suffered for a couple decades.

Welcome to this site, check it out.  You don't have to suffer like that anymore if you follow the advice from people on this site.  Plenty of people will be along to support if you want it.

Hang in there, we know it hurts.  Read and learn and take control of your pain most of the time.  You can have a good life with these things.

Hello Shawn , you are absolutely correct to say that this is the worst pain ever experienced by anyone. I have always said it feels like someone is shoving an ice pick through one side of my head at all point. Like you I have begged god to stop the pain and I have went so far as to say if you won't take the pain then at least take me.
As for your doctor I think its time to find a different doctor who will listen to you. I went from doctor to doctor from ER to ER for about ten years before a doctor even mentioned the word Cluster Headache. When he did all he said was they may be Cluster Headaches. He didn't say what to do about them or do a definite diagnosis. after that I found my current neurologist I sat down with her and she did something the doctors had not done since I began this whole search. SHE LISTENED TO ME!!! After a ten minute conversation and a few questions she said I have Cluster Headaches. She explained that there is no known cure or cause. She began to treat me tring to find the best treatment for my CH. Now we pretty much have it under control (well as much as they can be anyway).
Hang in there and don't give up.

LOCATING HEADACHE SPECIALIST

1. Search the OUCH site (button on left) for a list of recommended M.D.s.

2. Yellow Pages phone book: look for "Headache Clinics" in the M.D. section and look under "neurologist" where some docs will list speciality areas of practice.

3.  Call your hospital/medical center. They often have an office to assist in finding a physician. You may have to ask for the social worker/patient advocate.

4. Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register; On-line screen to find a physician.

5. Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register Look for "Physician Finder" search box. They will send a list of M.D.s for your state.I suggest using this source for several reasons: first, we have read several messages from people who, even seeing neurologists, are unhappy with the quality of care and ATTITUDES they have encountered; second, the clinical director of the Jefferson (Philadelphia) Headache Clinic said, in late 1999, that upwards of 40%+ of U.S. doctors have poor training in treating headache and/or hold attitudes about headache ("hysterical female disorder") which block them from sympathetic and effective work with the patient; third, it's necessary to find a doctor who has experience, skill, and a set of attitudes which give hope of success. This is the best method I know of to find such a physician.

6. Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register NEW certification program for "Headache Medicine" by the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties, an independent, non-profit, professional medical organization.
Since this is a new program, the initial listing is limited and so it should be checked each time you have an interest in locating a headache doctor.

See the PDF file, print out and use as a tool to discussion treatment options with any doc you see.

If you can't find a specialist  then find a doc with an open mind who will accept, from you, medical literature which we can supply. Many of us have had to educate our doc so that they could treat us effectively. Obvously, the key is a doc who can listen!

I agree....based on your description sure sounds like CH to me. Follow Bob's info and get to a headache specialist. When you talk to the receptionist ask if they have any cluster headache patients.  I use a 2 pronged approach to treating CH, I'm 50, male episodic for the last 31 years.

1: A good preventative medication. This is a med you take daily to reduce the number and intensity of your attacks. I use Lithium at 1200 mg a day. Takes about 10 days to become effective but once it's in me blocks up to 70% of my attacks. Verapamil is a very common first line prevent and effective for many here. Topomax has a lot of loyal followers too.

2: A good abortive. The attack is starting, now what? Your first line abortive should be breathing pure oxygen, with a non re breather mask, at a flow rate of at least 15 LPM. I can abort an attack in less then 10 minutes just huffing pure 02. Read the oxygen info link on the left as it must be used correctly. Imitrex injectables are effective but expensive and in my opinion no faster then oxygen. But I ALWAYS have an injector with me on cycle if I'm away from my oxygen.

For now get you some energy drinks. Red Bull, Rock Star, any containing the combination of caffeine and taurine. Chug one down at the first sign of an attack. Many can abort or really reduce an attack this way.

Doctors will not help you much with this condition. It requires you take charge, educate yourself and work with a doc to get what you need.
Welcome to the board, let's get you to stop hurting so much, that sucks.  Cry

Hi again Shawn.  A few additional notes for you to think about perhaps.

If you are having a hard time sleeping I assume you get the night time attacks?  If this is the case our caffein/taurine trick may not be that good.  Eases the pain but then you can't sleep anyways because you are jacked up on caffeine.  I know some people can still sleep through that too.

So think about the melatonin and herbs that people take here.  I haven't, but lots of the night timers do it successfully.  Someone fill in the details here please.

Also, if you are pretty sure you have cluster headaches, there has been lots of success with psychoactive plants and fungus as described in detail at Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register; No it's not a joke, that stuff works good for old Shaggy.  That's why I said earlier that I hear what you are saying and there are ways to control or avoid the pain most of the time.

For some people the pharmaceuticals can do that too.  For those of us who are freaked out by the side effects or whatever, there are other, more natural alternatives.

Oxygen seems to almost universally work as described in the oxygen section of this site.

Good luck daddy-o!   Smiley
