Lithium treatment and alcohol
May 1st, 2010 at 3:40am

I drink alcohol regularly (and have a relatively high tolerance), and I was recently prescribed Lithium.  The pharmaceutical papers only say alcohol may may make it harder to drive while on Lithium.  Well okay... But other websites completely warn against drinking on Lithium. I feel like i just don't get the same buzz anymore, but sometimes I worry i might not be safe.  Any personal experiences?

I've used lithium as my prevent for many many years. I take 1200 mg a day wile on cycle. The nice thing for me with lithium is when I'm at low cycle, I can drink an occasional beer and I have no problem.

When I say no problem, I mean I don't suffer a CH attack, and I have never suffered any reaction between the lithium and the alcohol. My guess is those warnings were written for the more common usues of lithium in the mental health conditions, where I understand the dosing is considerably higher then what we use. But that's just a guess!

Sadly I'm still in high cycle and don't even look at alcohol for fear I'll get hit! Grin
