Some of you have said you use DHE-45 injectable. I can't find it at any of the pharmacies. I did find it at drugstore.com. Have any of all ya'll used this? Where do you get what you do use?  wimsey1 (lookin' for a remission after 3 years of chronic, and 23 years of episodic) Cry

I get my DHE-45 from the local Hospital Pharmacy. They have to order it, comes in the next day. Most regular Pharmacies won't handle it.

It's actually an old med, the '45' is because it came out in 1945. It's a strong vasoconstrictor, works great for me doing it intramuscular, I get 24hrs pain free. Max recommended dose is 6 shots/week, 3 in 24hrs.

This med doesn't work for everyone and if any heart problems, not recommended.

Hope that helps,   Don

We have a box of it we had our local pharmacy order it in, it says it can be used IV, IM or sub-cut.  We have not used it thus far, but just finished a sub-cutaneous pump that delivered 2mg a day X 4 days through  home health, stopped the headaches for a total of 5 days (including the 4 while using it) and then the beast came back ~ once a day that hits a 8-9 for 4+hours and zomig, imitrex and O2 not touching, the first time it was used in the same fashion was feb 08 and was PF until about a month ago (was chronic til this point)

I suggest using it IM, sub-Q didn't work for me and others. Don't ask me why it just works better IM. The IM shots are a longer needle but it isn't as bad as it sounds. If you need help there are some utube videos of IM shots.

How are you using the O2? NON-rebreather, with a bag on it, at least 15lpm regulator? Don't hesitate when aborting with O2, that's critical.

Don

I get my DHE injectables at CVS, but Blue Cross resists paying so your neurologist has to contact them and insist.  After a fight they give in. My DHE comes in boxes of five ampules and they are a generic made in Canada.  I get seven shots out of five ampules. The drug store has to order them and it takes a couple of days.
When I first started to use DHE a shot  would abort a CH, but now I have to use O2 in conjunction with the shot.  The combination usually holds me for about 24 hours.

Clavers, Insurance co's are amazing. I have Blue Care Network and they cover it unlimited, I only have to buy the syringes @ $.30 ea. I guess any way to not pay. Ask them why the difference between mine & yours. it's the same co.

DHE is way cheaper than Imitrex etc.

Good luck, Don

Mikes headaches are growing worse, just got off the phone with the neuro, he wants me to have him take reglan 30 minutes prior then do a IM every 8 hours for the weekend.  He moved the appt up to this coming Wednesday and is going to try another occipital nerve block and if the insurance approves histamine desensitization again since he was chronic and after this he went 2 1/2 years pain free.  My new next door neighbor is Dr Tucker, she just moved here from University of Kentucky headache clinic, so I called her and she said this sounded reasonable as well, but if it gets any worse to go the ER and if they try giving narcotics to have them call her on her cell.  Unfortunately she is no longer seeing patients as she is doing a fellowship in traumatic brain injury but said she will help as much as possible from him.  Wish me luck on these IM's, makes me very nervous!
