Closing out a cluster headache
Apr 7th, 2010 at 12:14am

Hello I'm new to this site and cluster headaches but I have found something that works for me and it might work for you.

I've dealt with the clusters over the course of 3 years with an episode lasting about 2 weeks each year.

I don't know how severe mine are but I can tell you its the most painful thing I've dealt with.

When I get a CH I usually lay around after taking some advil, I don't know if the advil works but it puts me at ease knowing I've taken something haha.

When I can move around 'comfortably' I get in the shower and take a nice long HOT shower.  I don't know why but the shower really helps when the CH is at its bearable point.

I also try to think of Terrell Davis.  He used to play on Sundays with Migranes.  I feel if that guy was willing to run into 300 pound men headfirst with a migrane, I should be able to do most of my daily activities with a CH.  I can't always do what I want, but I try to refuse to be held prisoner by them.

Welcome Jordan!

I like your analogy with Terrell Davis Smiley
It's a great attitude.

You have come to the right place for info.  If you haven't already, you first should get diagnosed by a good neuro or pain management specialists.  Get all the test done to rule out other things.

Not knowing your health insurance situation, you can start by chugging down energy drinks with 1000mg Taurine at the onset of a cluster.  This does work for a lot of us.  Also 4-way Nasal Spray.  It knocks out shadow headaches for me.  You'll see the majority on this site encourages the use of oxygen at a high flow rate (15LPM or higher).  The Advil won't do anything.  If you have insurance and the right doctor see about getting prescribed the oxygen and if that doesn't work, look into a welding supply store.  You can get the non-rebreather mask here and a good regulator on various sites.  Everybody here will help you get started so please ask questions and read everything on the left of the screen.  Take the cluster quiz, read about oxygen and everything else.

All the best!
