new here...new baby at home
Nov 16th, 2009 at 9:37pm

Hi...Im 29 and I have had cluster headaches for the past 4 months. I had a baby in june and in mid july I started getting headaches...I now have them 3-6  times a day. Also I left my job so my health insurance ran out and I am waiting for my new insurance to start up in dec. My dr called me in a scipt for imatrex injections...2 shots were 209 and the refill kit with 12 shots were 2400!!! Today I had him try something else and he put me in for the nasal spray... 240 for 6 sprays...but my problem is I am breast feeding and it says not to take if bf...(I take advil every 3-4 hrs) I also ordered headach buster but that says do not take if bf...I know it would be smart to stop bf but she is refusing a bottle and I dont know what else to do right now!...Any sugg? I am hoping to get oxygen once I have insurrance. Untill then does anyone have any home remedies? I was up three times last night..im tired and I am trying to take care of my baby...and somehow keep  my sanity...Thank you for any help! I feel for you all!

My first real cycle was after the birth of my 2nd child as well.  That is tough.  I wondered for a while if it was the epidural but it runs in my family so I gave that up.  I didn't take anything during bf because I didn't know what else to do at that time.  Things are different now though and others will be along to tell you.

As far as I know, anything you ingest will go to the baby.  People here use energy drinks, kudzu, coffee, melatonin, etc. and they will come along and tell you more.  But I don't think you can have any of those either while bf.

The only thing I know of that might not have anything to do with bf is O2, but you should check that out and see for sure.  I know you are waiting on it.  Some people here may tell you how to get it asap.  I know nothing about it.  Maybe you can find out what you need here and just pay to go to a doctor that you know will give it to you until you can get to a headache specialist when your insurance kicks in.

I am so sorry this has happened to you.  Having and caring for a baby is exhausting in itself.  I hope you have good help with that!

Congratulations on the baby!  My children are my life!!!

Hello misee
Congratulations on the birth of your baby! I'm so sorry the horror of CH is spoiling the fun you should be having.
The only truly safe thing to use while breastfeeding is Oxygen. You need to use it with a non rebreather mask, or preferably, an optimask, at at least 15LPM. I can guarantee you it is a godsend from my own personal experience!

Ice packs may help too or heat - depending on your preference. I love ice as heat is a trigger for me.

Joni, there's another coincidence we have too! My CH started 2 days after the birth of my second child who will be 15 soon. Time flies eh?!

Misee - Totally unconnected with CH but another website you might find useful - Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register They are a lovely bunch there and full of empathetic and useful advice. They are ALMOST as good as here!  Wink

Let us know how you're doing - we'll help and support you all we can

My heart goes out to you...I know exactly how you feel.  I have had 4 babies (no clusters during pregnancy), but shortly after they were born the clusters hit.  I strongly believe in breast feeding, so I just dealt with each headache as they came.  Some "home" remedies that helped:
- I used ice packs on my head, at the base of the skull or just over the eye to postpone an attack or ease the pain until I was done breastfeeding.
- I would try to stop an attack by running ice cold water from the tub on my feet for 5 minutes (or walking out in the snow)

Here in Ontario I would call MotherRisk 1-416-813-6780, they are affiliated with the Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto.  They also have a website  Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register They were invaluable to me with helping with decisions regarding medication use while breastfeeding.  They were able to tell me the half life of certain triptans that I could use as a last resort and plan the breast feeding around it.

Do you have anyone that can help you?  Your mother or close friend.  Sometimes it is hard to ask for help, even if someone was just to sit with the baby so you can get some sleep?  I had my grandmother and a friend take turns with me on my worst days...

Push your doctor for a prescription for an oxygen tank (large tank) with a 15 LPM regulator with a non-rebreather mask, (read through the oxygen information on this site and the threads about getting your doctor to prescribe oxygen).  Cry if you have to!  But try for the oxygen...it really changed things for me.  With my last baby I was able to nurse her while inhaling the oxygen and I DIDN'T have to worry about any horrible side effects.

I know how badly you feel...4 months is a long time to deal with these clusters and a new baby.  Don't let the guilt get to you...by taking care of yourself, you are taking care of your baby.  My youngest is 5 and she knows my headache routines, helps get ice packs and helps to change the regulators on my oxygen tanks.

Let us know how you are doing.  I wish I could do more to help.

Thanks everyone for listening! I'm lucky to have a supportive husband but it was really helpful to have some support from you all. Great people here! I have found ice packs to be helpful.
I was wondering if it had something to do with the epidural as well...(I think its because Im looking for an answer). Or maybe something to do with my hormones...Did anyones headaches go away when you finished nursing?
2 more weeks untill my insurance is back. I can do anything for two weeks:) Thanks again...looking foward to trying Oxygen
yes, I am lucky to have my Mom close by:)

Glad you have good help!!!  Hang in there, I know it is tough!  My headaches have never been longer than 2 months, so I can't answer that question about them stopping after bf.  In other words, for me, bf had nothing to do with it that I can recall.  My girls are 26 and 23 now.  You will love every age!!!

Hi Misee.
No easy answers to why we have this pain...no epidurals for me, but I had the clusters before I had kids.  I also wonder if it is hormonal too, something different from when I was pregnant?  I nursed all the girls, from 6 months to 18 months, and it did not make any difference in the headaches when I stopped.  Don't pressure yourself to stop, especially if your baby is refusing the bottle.  Just go with what is easiest for you now.

Oxygen is surprisingly affordable, way cheaper than Imitrex!  If you can get the prescription, I would just try and get the oxygen.  2 weeks seems a long time to wait, especially dealing with the headaches and a baby!

Thinking of you

I forgot to mention that I take Melatonin at night to help sleep.  Melatonin is a chemical our body produces to promote a natural sleep cycle.  You might want to check it out and see if it can be used while breast feeding!?
