Rotator cuff surgery

Anyone here been through rotator cuff surgery?

Saw three docs...a general ortho doc, spine specialist and a shoulder specialist today. A bunch of X-Rays, CT Scan and an MRI (fell asleep during this one....go figure?)

Shoulder specialist is also a doc for the Eagles, Phillies and Flyers so hopefully he knows his sh*t.....but with the way the Iggles are playing, I'm not so sure. Undecided

Looking for info on recovery time, how much you cursed after the procedure, etc.

Not sure if surgery is a go or not until the MRI is reviewed next Monday.

I have not had this surgery but my sister did. She had a full recovery and is doing well. She has full use of her shoulder with minimal difficulty. I do not know how long recovery took but she is much happier know that she is not living in constant pain. Hugs Angie

Daily life over many years has a funny way of catching up with you, Brew.

Not one for band aids to cover up owies. Doc wanted to shoot me with corticosteroids this afternoon...NOT!

If I have to have surgery to fix the problem, I'm "a go". Fix it and make me feel better so I can cut my grass, do my yard work, walk my dogs, etc without living on ibuprofen and snuggling with ice packs every night. Sick of being gimpy if you know what I mean. Will also have to be shoveling snow soon so fix me up A.S.A.P.

Doc was cool. He had autographed jerseys from all of the major Philly sports teams all over his office plus he just went thru hip surgery so at least he knows what it's like to be a patient. Roll Eyes

Cyn - the cortisone shots aren't bad. I had one in an elbow when my epicondylitis wouldn't stop flaring up. It's a short term fix at best, but ooooh-la-la it's almost immediate and the pain free time was very welcome.

I know I'll have to have something more major done down the line but so far it's been good. Don't discount some relief while waiting to make the decision.

Didn't have the surgery for mine. Let it heal on its own, but if I had it to do over I would borrow the money if I had to. (had no insurance at the time) Especially if you have a knowledgeable Dr like it sounds you do.

Really have missed you around here, but been to lazy to write. Embarrassed

Are you bringing John to LouCon in Jan? I think it's time he met the family. Grin

Hey Cyn,

Good to hear from you, but sorry 'bout the surgery.

You're probably doing the right thing to get the darn thing "fixed". I "tuffed" mine out and it still bothers me (esp. when the weather changes or I move the wrong way - but I'm OLD ya know!).

You've got big vibes and lots of prayers coming your way from down here in Texas. Get 'r done and then get them dogs walked - I hear they're getting plumb lazy. Give John a scratch for me.

Iinjured mine (not sure how) and had the surgery done. It was a piece of cake. I was up walking around in no time. You have to go through lots of phycical therapy after the surgery and do lots of exercises to get it back to wear it should be. Maybe 2-3 months of pt. I unfortuantly fell on my shoulder right after pt was over with by getting out of a juquizi. I was in so much pain. Yup I tore it again. I had surgery scheduled but God healed it and I didn't have to go through a second surgery despite the second MRI showing that it was torn and the third MRI showing it was fine.

I've been through this and agree with everyones comments. The cortisone shot hurts at first but it buys you some thought time to see if it can heal on it's own. The next day it's like you have no problems. My doctor said it's time to do the surgery when you are on ibuprofen round the clock and can't sleep through the night. I put it off maybe a yr or so. PT was long but once I moved into a water program it went very fast. It was definatley easier to deal with than this broken leg!! Recovery was more of a nuisance, tying shoes, writing on the board at school, carrying in groceries, showering, but it all can be done. It's been over 10 yrs and I still feel prety good and don't regret it although I did the first year I did it. Good luck! And by the way, I fall asleep in MRI's too!

thebbz Ex Member	Re: Rotator cuff surgery Reply #16 - Oct 20^th, 2009 at 4:48pm relax cyn, its only about half a headache. 8 days post op and the doc is talking feb or march for light duty. arthroscopic rotater cup,clavicle resection and another procedure i cant spell or pronounce. ...cant type yet, this took fifteen minutes.

Thanks to all for the info. and well wishes.

Will meet with the doc again on Monday to get the results of the MRI.

bbz.....sorry to hear about the bum wing. Thanks for taking the time to respond. Sounds like you are on your way to recovery and I hope it's a speedy one. Not too worried about the post-op pain if I do have to have surgery...can usually tough it out fairly well. Am not looking forward to being gimpy during the recovery time. Sad

Jerry....John met some of the family in Richmond, a few who have visited me at home and some more at Jim Lafferty's last month. I think they scared him. ; Unfortunately I don't think we will be able to make it to LouCon this year.

The only complaints I heard were during the PT time (that is necessary, but not fun). Wishing you the best with the surgery and recovery. Beth
