To anyone who has self injected Imitrex
Sep 28th, 2009 at 9:32pm

SO..my pharmacy messed up and gave me the "do it yourself" imitrex injectables and ten 1/2" needle insulin syringes.  I've never injected myself this way before, but can't imagine it's too difficult.  I'm used to the auto injector.  My only question is as follows..to anyone that's done this.. do you put the whole 1/2" needle in?  or just part of it.  The auto injector needle doesn't come out a full 1/2" I'm pretty sure.  Obviously this is in the thigh, stomach, same places as the auto injector.

A little guidance please Smiley

Thanks all,
Joshua

Simply get the tip of the needle under your skin and fire away. A 45 degree angle will do nicely.

I'm used to just firing the needle straight in.  So doing it this way I guess just angle it in to some fatty tissue?  I am a bit freaked, but it woulda taken ages to get the auto injector kit, so I will let you know how it goes Smiley

Great!  Thank for the info guys.  Much appreciated.  Hoping to get some more mileage out of my stock this way.  So maybe this was a happy accident that the pharmacy made.

G'night.

JD.

I have come to prefer the syringe over the auto injector.  With the syringe (I use an insulin syringe) I fill it with 20 units.  By doing the 20 units, I can get three jabs out of one vial!

It is so much easier to get three of the same size from the syringe, than trying to guess one third of the auto injector (when using the imitrex trick).

I also use the same syringe for all three injections.

I have found the best place, is to "pinch an inch" of my belly, and then inject into that.  That way I don't have to worry if I go too deep, as it is all fatty tissue, anyway.

The trick is to get under the skin, but NOT into the muscle.

I hope these and the others' suggestions help you out!

Wow, I wish my pharmacy would make a mistake like that! Unfortunately that's impossible, for Imitrex sc is only available in the auto-injector kit in The Netherlands. My neuro prescribed separate syringes so I can inject 3 mg instead of 6, but the pharmacy is still looking for a way to make this possible.  Undecided

I'd consider this a very lucky mistake indeed!  Cool

I do what the Imitrex tip says on the left hand column of this site.  I use a 6mg cartridge 3x.
I just simply wipe the needle with alcohol after each use and then re-use.  I use half of a q-tip to push approximately 2mg of juice into the skin.  I actually prepare the cartridge as soon as I get it.  I take a sharpie marker and mark the capsule in thirds.  I do use the auto injector on the last 1/3 of the capsule/syringe.  I get 6 shots out of each refill.  2mg does the trick for me.

I'm The same as Chuck, I fill the whole syringe and inject 20 at a time 3 times with the same syringe. I always pinch the skin on my thigh and pump it in.

A little tip, Save your used vials, if you run out of full ones, I can get one full syringe full out of 5 or 6 used vials. Shake the vial or flick it while upside down to get all the liquid to the bottom and insert the syringe so it just barely goes through the rubber seal and suck it out(repeat with the other vials) then push the air out of the syringe.

Hope this helps.

I may have missed it, but are you using oxygen?

Not necessarily a mistake. Happened to me once
and I asked why they weren't filling the script as written (which they always seem to be so careful about). The response was...."it's the same thing, is there a problem?"

I quickly shut up...WAY more trex for the same price.
I'm thinking its worth asking for anyone who has an
auto inject script...

Best,

Jon

I hate the auto injector.  I always end up  with bruises on my arms from it.   Sad
