New- Dr.Todd Rozen- Things are looking up
Apr 25th, 2009 at 6:01pm

I had my first visit with Dr. Todd Rozen,  a pre-eminent cluster migraine specialist in North America. I could not have been more surprised to find  he moved from Mich. to Pa.

My wife immediately got me an appointment and we went Fri. I was very impressed with his knowledge of our condition. He will be seeing me weekly although he can't see me next week due to  Neuro. meetings that are scheduled, I will see him the week after.

I have been having a great deal of problems with pressure behind the eyes left, right or both at the same time, and it's gone on for weeks. He gave me an Ocipital nerve block on both sides during the visit and it may have helped some. The two days proir to my visit with him it was lessing up a bit from time to time and he feels this may be an indication it's letting up its grip. He wants me to continue the meds. for a while and see if this trend continues

Lately I've had Doctors retire, move etc. and went through about 3 in a row.

We feel we are no longer fighting this thing alone, as my previous neuro. was difficult to see, the hospital is short handed, and he has limited experience with cluster heads. When the hospital told me Dr. Rozen was coming on staff at the main hospital, about 40 mile from my house, I was thrilled. I googled him and he is highly recommened in our field.

He will be doing a demand valve study at this hospital, and is a strong supporter of O2 therapy, and written papers in support of this. I'll keep you guys posted.

I'm not out of the woods, but, I'm still in the fight. Sucks as always and I can't tell you how much your support means to Deb and I.

Thanks, I'll keep you posted, I assume he's the same guy from Mich. I never did ask, LOL, he started talking about the high flow rate O2 etc. and some studies he was involved in etc. and I made the assumption. I'll ask when I see him again.

I was with him over an hour and a half. He also had some labs done on me for testosterone levels etc. He really seemed to be on the cutting edge of a lot of stuff. I let you all know what he's working on if it's of interest.

My wife and I both liked him and his caring attitude and amazing knowledge. He has a lot of tools in his bag of tricks, many things I've never heard of, we're just getting started.

Chrisw,

He's at Geisinger Medical Center located in Danville Pa. approx. a two and one half hour plus drive from the Phila. area. About 150 miles.

Thanks Joe, bout time I caught a break, LOL, I'll keep you all posted. He wants to talk to me further on my demand valve and I'm sure that will be looked into further as his study moves on. I'll get with you guys that have them if he deems it helpful, Chuck, Joe etc.

I am happy to hear you are getting the attention you deserve.

I am also very interested in anything he may have to say about testosterone...has he had success with patients regarding hormone therapy?...as you know, it has been a blessing for me...so far.

Paul,

Yes, he ref. hormone and testosterone success, that's why he wanted me to have the blood work done that day.

I'll fill you all in on anything that comes up of interest. I have never in 15 years of dealing with this had a neuro. as cutting edge and experienced as this doctor

Joel Saper and Todd Rozen are the "Michigan" doctors that all my neuros here in Canada reference as the "cluster experts"...you are definately in great hands. Do keep us posted.

Boy did you luck out!  Dr. Rozen is an AWESOME doctor to have for your cluster treatment!  He is GREAT!

And yes, he IS doing some great work with his research into the higher oxygen flow rates for aborting our very painful cluster headache attacks.

In fact, now that he’s taken some of the wraps off the planned demand valve therapy study he will be conducting, there a few things you and the others here on CH.com need to know…

The demand valve therapy that Dr. Rozen is working on was developed by cluster headache sufferers and members from right here at CH.com.  As some of you already know, Pete Batcheller developed the initial version of the demand valve therapy in 2007 based on work he started in 2006 to improve the effectiveness of oxygen therapy.  Pete and Michael Berger began perfecting that therapy in 2007 with easy to follow procedures and support from Royce Fishman at Linde LifeGas.

All this led to an informal pilot study of the demand valve therapy that Pete, Michael, and Royce developed, and that I was the first to use.  Michael Berger’s background in clinical studies proved invaluable in developing the statistical analysis package in MS Excel, that they’ve been using to gather, analyze, and report the pilot study's results.

Although the results of this pilot study are still closely held for some very important reasons, I can say the demand valve therapy works exceptionally well for me and others that have taken part in this informal pilot study.

Pete and Royce were responsible for gaining Dr. Rozen’s support for the informal pilot study as the Senior Medical Adviser.  They also convinced him to take on the responsibilities of being the Principle Investigator conducting the formal study of the demand valve method of delivering oxygen therapy.

In September of 2007, I had the privilege of delivering the results of my participation in the demand valve pilot study to members of the Norwegian Clustercompagniet and leading neurologists from the Competency Center in Trondheim, Norway.  This was all made possible by the assistance of Svenn and Tony, and a “green light” from Pete, Royce and Dr. Rozen to release this information.

There are other unsung heroes that have been actively involved in promoting the demand valve therapy over the last 2 years.  They include Helen Williams, Svenn Thørn and Tony Amabile.  In November of 2007, Pete, Michael, Helen, Svenn and Royce traveled to Munich to meet with the Health Care Managers at the Linde Group headquarters in order to gain support for Dr. Rozen’s study.

That task was made much easier by showing a side-by-side video of me using oxygen therapy at 15 liters/minute compared to the demand valve therapy.  Tony Amabile produced this outstanding video, and I know that when the time is right, Tony will be able to make this video available to all of you. It's a jaw dropper, and it clearly illustrates the demand valve oxygen therapy works so much faster in aborting my attacks, than the standard therapy at 15 liters/minute.

There are a few other things you might find interesting …  Pete, Michael and Royce filed a patent for the demand valve therapy last July as a pre-condition to obtain the funding for Dr. Rozen’s study.  You should know these three assigned their rights to this patent to LifeGas in order to secure that funding.

Pete and Michael worked closely with Royce and Dr. Rozen in developing the Cluster Headache Survey taken by many of us from last October through January of this year.  I’m not privy to the results, but I’m told they will be very beneficial to cluster headache sufferers worldwide.  I understand that Dr. Rozen will be presenting the survey results this fall at the 14th International Headache Congress in Philadelphia. Once that happens, we’ll have the results published here on CH.com and on OUCH.   Dr. Rozen and Royce plan to submit several papers reviewing the survey data to other leading journals, so these results are going to get a lot of mileage and that will be very good for all of us.

I’m sure Pete, Michael and Royce will have a lot more to say once Dr. Rozen completes his study of the demand valve therapy and reports the results …  Until then, I think it’s safe to say there’s been a lot of hard work done and still going on behind the scenes to help fellow cluster headache sufferers.

So in closing, I’ll say it again.  You’re fortunate to be in Dr. Rozen’s VERY capable hands! He is one of our great hopes for this damn condition that we all know so well!

Chuck

Chuck,

Thanks, I am having a very hard time with this cycle, it's not so much the pain, it's gone to a pressure and sandy feeling behind one eye or the other and sometimes both at the same time.

Maddening to say the least and it's been non-stop for weeks on end. Just can't shake it. Lately, it does give me a break for very short periods, somethings up.

I also have deterioration of the vertabrae at the base of the skull, supposedly from a previous accident, that may not be helping. I know this never troubled me in the past. I have never had any right side problems in over 15 years, so that's new as well. Plenty of things to consider, as you can see.

Deb and I feel blessed to be in the hands of such an experienced Doctor and truly feel we will make some head-way. I will keep you posted as to our progress.

Chuck, you never cease to amaze me, you stay pretty cutting edge youself. I spoke with you regarding demand valves a while back and can't thank you enough for your input. Keep up the good work brother.
