Cluster Headaches on People's Pharmacy radio show
Mar 21st, 2009 at 11:29am

Today! I listen to WNPR so it is at 2pm in Wisonsin.

I guess a women claims she treats her CH with Vicks Vapor rub.

I do not know if she was a caller or a guest of the show, or if she does it by herself or is part of a study, or if she is self diagnosed or by a doc.

Someone just emailed me a general message about CH on the radio so check it out if you want!

As far as I'm concerned, cluster busting has been the best treatment I've tried. No migraines since I started it, and my hits have gotten so much better. Wanna know more?

I "supposeitory" it's worth a try, but I never had much luck with it. Tried rubbing it on my chest, sleeping inside of the room with it in a humidifier and even breathed in the steam. Also tried the white tube you stick up your nose. I remember even trying to put the jar under my nose and even some right at the nasal opening. Vick's just didn't work for me, but maybe they have changed the formula.

It's cheap and available, I'd say give it a try. Who knows, it might just work.

I found it, they have podcasts. I'm listening to the show on the front page of the site, not sure if it has the content  on CH or not, will let you know. But here it is:

Ok it does have the caller asking about Cluster Headache. It happens after the discussion on peanut allergies. She says she rubs the Vicks on the head where it hurts (temple area, including on the hair), and then puts a warm washcloth. She said it takes about 30 minutes to start working...but wouldn't that be how long a headache lasts anyway? The callers name is Allison. SHe also takes migraine med which causes her to be really tired.

PPR says people have long used Vicks for headaches, but never specifically for clusters. Then they went on to say that clusters are unusual in women, more common in men, blah blah blah. The show hosts also mention using peppermint oil.

They say it makes no sense scientifically but "might help, won't hurt, not too expensive to try".

(Edited to add details from the show now that I have heard it)

So, correct me if I'm wrong - our tax dollars went to help produce this drivel?

Thanks, Christy.

I did a site search on Cluster Headache, and got two hits - one for massive doses of vitamin B2 and the other for cayenne nasal spray.

If it does end up on NPR, however, it is being subsidized by you and me.

If you combine them, your nose will burn like hell, but you just might have more energy thanks to the B2!
