Severed artery in accident, and no more headaches!
Feb 12th, 2009 at 12:29pm

I use to get cluster headaches as well as terrible weather headaches, but after a car accident in 2004, I've experienced neither type of headache, and have actually had very few headaches all together (I can't even recall my last one!)

In my car accident, an artery (about an inch above my left eye, sort of the middle of my forehead) was severed. It has since healed and is just a scar, but from that day on, I have never had a cluster headache, or any weather related headaches.

I'm not sure if there has been any research on what exactly that artery has to do with cluster headaches, but I really wish they (any CH research facility) would check it out because I whole heartily believe that that artery may hold a possible cure to these headaches.

were your "weather headaches" similar to your "cluster headaches"?

My gut reaction - not being a medical specialist or anything - is that it was probably the bump on the head and not the severed artery that did it.

You'll find I ask this question a lot around here:

Causation or correlation?

I am glad it worked for you.  It would be impractical to emulate this.

Hi there, welcome to the board!  I'm so glad you aren't suffering anymore...yes, the question becomes how did your accident affect the CH; for a lot of people, head trauma seems to have triggered it in the first place.  A lot of unknowns.

Don't be frightened by Potter-he's a teddy bear.   Here's how I picture him  (God help me!):

If your hypothalamus is malfunctioning, or your trigeminal nerve is irritated, then CH will simply affect other arteries in your head, or even switch to the other side. In fact, that is exactly what happened to a few people after surgery.

I hope next you will not advice us to go see Ali and his friends to have him hack into our arteries ! According to Ali, he can cure a whole host of things with that procedure. No one here believes him.

While the blood vessels in your head are definitely linked to the pain you feel in a CH, it could be a plethora of things that gave you relief.  Perhaps the cut and associated trauma, or the shock to your body, or the physical impact itself.  I suspect it would be rather difficult to nail anything down with certainty if only because what causes this conditon isn't yet understood.  I'm very glad to hear that you've been relieved of your pain, though, and it is awesome that something so good came from something negative!

Actually there is a guy who comes around here once in a while claiming he can cure clusters by cutting an artery.

His name is Ali

Is Ali a doctor or does he just like to go around cutting people's heads?   Just curious.....

He's an actual doctor.  Practices in Illpackyourstan or one of those stan countries (actually I think he's Syrian).

Comes around every once in a while and there's a group who drive him off with their troll sticks.  Be interesting to see what happens next time he shows up now that DeeJ has changed the rules.

If I recall, Danny Boy's Dad is supposed to be the doc. But then I suppose they have different licensing practices than the AMA. He can be entertaining though.....

You're correct Marc.  Last time I talked with Danny Boy he complained that Ali had stolen his dad's proceedure!

Hello, I have yet to meet anyone here who had clusters before, but dont have clusters now. You said your last bout was 2004, That is not even near record times for remission around here. Maybe the  bump or the meds you took caused you to skip the last cycle. But im not ready to call that a cure yet.

interesting post. it seems possible. keep in mind that a few of us go years without having another cycle.

what is a weather headache? it seems that my cycles usually hit when the weather is very dry.

So, there is an artery there?

Also, while this certainly could be a true experience, are we all just a bit suspicious because of Ali?

I think if you put Brew and coach_bills posts together you really hit the nail on the head.  Add in that my headache specialist once told me that any cycle could be your last.  I haven't heard that since he said that, but he did say that sometimes it just goes intoa  very long remission and doesnt return.

Anyway, interesting experience, but I doubt this scenario could be safely replicated for research purposes.
