C6-C7 (& Paraesthesia) May cause my CH?
Dec 2nd, 2008 at 11:56pm

My HA neurologist is DR Fred Taylor at Park Nicollet HA clinic. I explained to him that I’m feeling funny nerve twitches like a cell phone on vibrate. I am getting them a lot in my L hip, L foot, L calf, and R foot. My C6-7 disk is flattened and partially ruptured so I also have L+R hand and arm numbness L is worse (dam left side) with a 18% nerve disability in my arms.

I looked up the med info and it is a symptom of MS called Paraesthesia. The thing is, I don’t fit the norm for the MS type. It just happens when I’m sitting still and flat. The put your chin to your chest test does nothing (thank God). So now that I’m going back to my general neurologist to get it checked out. I am so afraid he’s going to tell me to fuse it again and I may have to finally take his advice. I am soo afraid of going under the knife that just writing this has my hair on end.

So to my point in writing this interesting little story is that I saw dr taylor last month and described this to him and he actually had a friggn spark in his eye for the first time ever. He said there is some write-ups he has read that concluded that C6-7 crosstalk can irritate the dam nerves in our head. With my neck I have no doubt. I asked him if he had a copy or URL but he was unsure.

I will get some info on this and pass it on forthright. Wink

Man, Roland, this is about too much!

I have dessicated, compressed, and bulging discs at C4-C5 and C6-C7.  Some minor spurs also.  I have different symptoms and had a consult with a Neuro surgeon today.

The good news is that I don't need surgery and I declined the shot of steroids in my neck.  As I don't like narcotics, we left with a handshake.  I guess that after CH, other pain is almost tolerable.

I wish you the best, the only advice is to hold off on surgery unless you don't have much of a life without it.

Wishing you well,

Ray

It may come to that Ray,

I have lived with it for 20 years now. It is also getting worse with the hands because I keep managing to burn myself and find blisters on my fingers. I was working on the car and managed to burn me fingers on a hot bolt that didn’t feel to hot when I touched it.

I can live with it just fine but if there’s a chance to alleviate my CH in any way I just may do it voluntarily, otherwise I putting it off.

Thx, Ray!

Lookin forward to that info.  Neck problems have been known as a trigger in some (called 'cervicogenic').

I think that most people have too simple a notion of clusters, coming straight from the hypothalamus to the trigeminal. That might be true for some, but not everyone. What you call cross-talk I call peripheral processing, and I think in some people, it can play a real role in clusters. I think this cross-talk can also can be a factor in some with inflamed sinuses, dental or jaw problems, etc.  I think nerve blocks work by interrupting the cross-talk.

The outer boundary of what we currently believe is feasible is far short of what we actually must do.

I've always had a bad habit of popping my neck. In early years of cluster headache, I noticed that I would get an overwelming urge to pop my neck right as an attack started. The popping at first would seem to give some relief, but then the full blown attack would hit suddenly. I've always wondered if there was some sort of connection. I've had cluster cycles when not popping my neck too, but it did seem to play a role previously. I get a bad cycle very rarely these days. I always get out a tens electrical nerve stimulator and try to zap the nerves into submission. I use it on the back of my neck and head, jaw area, and even the temple. Seems to help a bit. I think it confuses the beast anyway. Best of luck and prayers for you, Rich

Hey Stressfree, its kinda weird because i crack my neck often and there have been certain times that i even felt i was able to "beat one" by cracking my neck the right way. When i would get a wake up call i would sit and roll my head back and forth to try to pop it. Like i said a few times i felt it worked. But the thrill would never last to long because it only worked rarely. Thanks for the insight. Coach Bill

So I got to the appointment just in time to get hit in the waiting room. I asked the receptionist if they had any Maxalt samples to save me and she said she would have to ok it with the doc first. I sat there as it went up and up for 10 min to a solid K5 as I noticed she was back at the desk. When she saw me look at her in a distressed way she said she was still waiting for the doc, so I asked if I could wait in an exam room and she complied with a hot pack also. By the time she brought the Maxalt I was already coming down. I wrote thank you with a smiley face on a post it and handed it to her at the desk and she was astonished by my gratitude in an unbelievable fashion.

I have a cervical MRI set up for next Saturday and a round of steroids after to see if it will improve the disk problem. I only hope that there will be no fusion but the MRI will decide the course of action. He has not seen or heard of the Paraesthesia having any correlation with CH so I may have to research it more on my own.

Roland:

I'm praying for you!  I'm interested also because I have a similar disc problem.

Wishing you the best,

Ray
