something that helped me...
Oct 18th, 2008 at 10:29pm

Hi All

Just wanted to put something out there - something that helped me out in the midst of a cluster headache attack.  It didn't eliminate the headache but i believe that it helped stem some of the pain.

There is an acupuressure point located in the 6th intercostal space (the space between two ribs), below and in line with the nipple called Liver 14.  I found that pushing this myself with my index finger had an effect on the pain i was suffering.  The point itself is quite tender - but this is to be expected as, in chinese medicine, the energetics of the liver are involved in headaches so it's possible that the energetics of the liver plays a role in cluster headaches too.  I'm NOT an expert... just studying oriental medicine and shiatsu but wanted to share something that could help you out.  If it doesn't, then i'm sorry.  As I said, it didn't eliminate the pain for me, but i feel that it had a tangible effect.

To find the point, locate your nipple (directly overlying a rib), and then slide your finger downwards (towards your feet) a little way until you reach the intercostal space below the nipple.  Then slide your finger down over the next rib and into the next intercostal space.  This is the 6th intercostal space (but the second intercostal space below the nipple) and the location of Liver 14.  The most tender
part in that area (but still in line with the nipple) is the bit to push...

I found that it helped out most when I was experiencing a paroxysm of pain.  It's interesting as this point is supposed to help spread liver energy...

Can you give us a skeletal picture to look at? Unfortunately, gravity has affected where my nipples are, compared to a man, or compared to 15 years ago.

I checked your link, and it has a muscular view of a man's body.

It's the hypothalamus that is the problem, however, putting pressure on some areas does decrease pain for some things.

If it works for you, great!

After quiting my Neuro Docs, I tried accupuncture.

I, being a man of modern science, was VERY skeptical. I must admit the I did find relief. If I had a CH going during treatment ( as I usually did ) it would go away and the CHs the rest of the evening felt much more mild. Unfortunately, when morning came, the clock reset and the pain was on again...

Don't know why.... don't care why... only care that it worked...

Hi, I am a Shiatsu (accupressure) practitioner and massage therapist in NYC.

I've worked on my friend's Chronic Refractory Cluster Headaches and we got a really huge reduction in pain without meds or O2.

I'm looking for volunteers in NYC to work on in my private practice. This is not a solicitation to buy any services. Instead, I am trying to figure out if the protocol works for other people with similar headaches.

Maybe one of you knows an MD in NYC who would like to investigate this with me?

My plan is to find a researcher/MD in NYC to apply with me for money from NIH under their CAM grants.

Any interested volunteers and/or information is appreciated.

Thanks.

To clarify, I want to
1) find people with RCH
2) work on you for free in NYC
3) with you, figure out the most effective Shiatsu protocol
4) find an MD or MD/PhD in NYC, preferably an early-career neurologist, headache specialist, or pain management specialist, with whom I can apply for NIH "CAM" grant money
5) do a clinical study of Shiatsu for RCH and publish it.

Anyone who can help at all, please find me: alexlippard at gmail dot com

I am graduating from Swedish Inst. shortly and will be working at Body + Mind on the West Side starting in May.

Thank you.
