Also! Taking ibuprofen at least twice a week increases your risk of hearing loss, that's the finding of a long term study on women by Harvard University in the US, which also showed more frequent use increased the risk to 24 percent. Ibuprofen can reduce blood flow to the cochlear, which could result in cellular damage and cell death, study author Dr Sharon Curhan says. She recommends taking them as little as possible.

The study looked at people who had a cardiac arrest (where the heart stops beating) and looked to see if they had used a NSAID (Non-Steroidal AntiInflamatory Drug) in the last 30 days. They found that someone taking ibuprofen increased their risk by 31% and 61% for diclofenac.

However the NSAID users were "more likely to have cancer and rheumatic diseases", so in other words, they were already unwell, hence the NSAID use.

As to how valid the conclusion is, it would be like doing a study looking at births and finding out that a large percentage had seen a midwife prior to the birth, then coming to the conclusion that midwifes caused births to happen.

Dr Patrick McBride said not everyone needs to worry. It is older people or individuals that have heart disease or are at risk of heart disease who need to lay off the medicine.
"For a younger person, taking them periodically like for a knee injury or for a headache, as long as people took them one or two times a month, it wouldn't be as serious a risk,” he said.

I avoid all NSAIDs like the plague. You might as well be taking rat poison... i.e., Coumadin, a.k.a. Warfarin...  Warfarin was first registered for use as a rodenticide in the US in 1948.

All NSAIDs cause GI tract bleeds, even at small doses like the 81 mg heart healthy aspirin.

The anti-inflammatory regimen is far safer at reducing pain and it's healthy to boot.
