Title: Trying to get off Topamax
Post by Eroc on Jun 15th, 2014 at 9:31pm
I'm tapering down slowly and still having random pains that I believe are just related to the Topamax.

I was at a max of 750 mg a day for about a month and am now at 200 mg.

I am not clear as to how fast I can safely taper off of this crap.  And my Neuro has abandoned me.

I also suspect an underlying sinus or ear problem as I have a loud tinnitus and ear pressure problem that has been around since this bout started nearly five months ago.  Also making it the longest I have ever had.

Any thoughts and experiences are appreciated.

Thanks,

Eric

Sorry to hear about the neuro, Eric, though it's my personal belief that no neuro is better than a bad neuro.

Even so, we always recommend that any change in your medication should be under the guidance of a competent medical professional.

May you sit the beer test soon,

Brian down under.

Hey Eric,

The following link should help answer the mail on tapering off topamax...

If you read through the literature, tapering appears to apply to patients taking topamax to control seizures...  As long as seizures are not in your playbook, it appears you should be able to do a fairly rapid taper.

Tinnitus is another story... In many ways, it's lot like cluster headache...  Like crap...  it happens, usually with age...  There's no clear cause and so far, no cure.  Its pathophysiology is about as fuzzy and murky as that of cluster headache.

What little I know about the treatments to control tinnitus sound like a lot of touchy feely kabuki dancing.  Eating a healthy diet, staying hydrated and lowering stress appear to work as well as anything else.

I've had it for many years...  It comes... and occasionally goes... or at least there are times when I don't notice it...

Take care,

V/R, Batch

Hi Eric,
You're doing the right thing tapering, just don't do it too fast. I had to stop cold turkey from 400 mg a day because I got poisoned by it and was being violently sick immediately as soon as I took it. Withdrawal was hell, and three months later I'm still left with a constant tremor and a twitching palate.
I've never had problems like that before. I hope the side effects do go away.

Kelly
