Title: Regulator making noise.
Post by jason1212 on Apr 18th, 2014 at 2:08pm
I just bought a new welding regulator for my H tank.  Boy this thing blows, I am fine with a very low setting.  Anyway, at that setting the regulator is making this very annoying kind of honking sound.  Anyone else get this?  Trying to figure out if it's normal or if I got some kind of defective regulator?

I have two of the harbor freight regs my old one (3 yrs) does not do that however my new one bought a month ago does.  It's likely due to the fact that it's not designed for the low pressures we are using for CH.

It is really annoying but I have enough bills coming in just for the O2, Trex, EKG's and dr visits that  I will deal with it for now.

Perhaps a different unit would work better.  Not sure.

I'm pretty much in the same boat.  Good to know this is somewhat common and the reg isn't going to explode.

All I could think of to avoid the sound is that maybe it is the connection that needs to be realigned at the tank.

Disconnect, open the valve and let a bit of 02 out (no smoking in room) and reconnect making sure it is perfectly aligned and a tight fit.  Hope this helps!

Be SURE (very SURE) that you don't use and type of oil around high pressure O2. If the noise is really irritating, try creating some back pressure or restriction in the low pressure line feeding your mask -or try a 15' tube. Pinch off or fold the line and see if it quiets down.

Try cranking it open a lot and then cranking it back down to normal to see of makes the diaphragm stop chattering.
