Title: Loading Imitrex into Diabetic Syringes Post by jason1212 on Apr 14th, 2014 at 10:23pm
Anybody do this? Any good techniques? I got my hands on a bunch of new diabetic syringes and I much rather inject my Imitrex from these. I have no issues getting the trex viles out of auto injectors but I just tried filling my first syringe and it didn't go so good...lost nearly and entire vile of trex :( I pulled the punger out of the syringe and filled from the back, so far so good, the problem comes when you try to put the plunger back in. My issue was 2 fold, the trex is perfectly clear so it was hard to diferentiate between trex and air. The plan was to just get the plunger in a little, then hold the needle side in the air, let the trex settle on the pluger and then force some air out. I thought I had all the trex sitting on the plunger but as I'm forcing air out, trex starts streaming out of the cap on the needle. Anybody have a better way?

I also use syringes to dose down the Trex. I first remove the vial from the auto injector and insert it into a synthetic wine bottle cork. I had my Neuro prescribe me syringes with 1" needles. You can then pierce the rubber stopper or slide along side of it and draw the fluid out.
I also simply order the Trex in vials making the whole process even easier. Your pharmacy will have to order them in special and be prepared to wait and argue with your insurance company as they are really expensive. Doing this isn't the most sterile thing but compared to living out a full CH, I will risk a little injection site infection any day. That being said I also have injected a 6mg auto into a used vial and then dosed from there. Hope this helps, E |
