Title: Transporting an oxygen tank to higher elevation
Post by slacker032 on Dec 29th, 2012 at 10:11am
I'm driving from LA to Mammoth Lakes (elevation 7900 feet) today and plan to take a couple of O2 tanks in my car.  Are there any issues I should consider when transporting them to higher elevations?   Should I open the valve for a couple of seconds and relieve some of the pressure along the way?

No concerns about elevation changes. The weight of a tank suggests just how much steel is protecting you.

But, keep the valve protected/covered!

When you say to keep the valve protected, can you expand on that?

Last thing you want is something to knock the valve open or completely off. Not likely to happen but it can.

Just pack the tank where it won't roll around and if you have an old bath towel laying around wrap the valve with it for padding.

I've carried tanks for thousands of miles......no issues.

General idea: when handling a heavy cylinder use the protective cap, which may come with it from the supplier, so that the value can't be damaged/broken off the tank, by a blow, being dropped, etc.

No problem.  I've had mine at June Lake and Whitney Portal.

The law requires the tanks to be secured, and either standing upright in a rack or base, or lying flat and secured.  The base of the tank should be toward the front of the vehicle.  If using an M tank or bigger with the CGA 560 valve the cap should be in place.  With E tanks as long as they are secure you should have not problem.
