Title: Home sweet Home
Post by Verbal Architect on Nov 8th, 2012 at 4:33pm
Hi, My name is Aaron, you can call me Verbal,I am a musical artist from Madison,WI ;) I have been a chronic sufferer for the past 6 years. I am currently on Oxygen therapy (15 LPM) Seems to be the only thing that works for me. I tried a site like this a couple years back but things got ruff and that kind of fell apart. I am very excited to be back in the loop again ;)

I have tried a lot of medications over the years and most times just cant deal with the side effects(slurring, passing out, going to the hospital)Prednisone and verapamil are a couple I have tried if I remember correcly. For about a year I tried working with the suma shots witch would cause many rebounds. I am currently trying Indomethacin 75 mg two times a day.Seems to be going ok so far. When I started getting attacks the first two years I didn't know about 02 therapy and was having a very hard time. After jumping through hoops with docters ect,I was prescribed 02 at 8 lpm. After a while this rate wasn't helping, I found a new doctor and he had my lpm raised to 15. Since then I have been using my 02 and testing new meds my neurologist suggests. I am a chronic sufferer, my remission periods at most last 2-3 days and those breaks don't happen very often. The shadowing never goes away for me its constant all the time, most of my time is spent on the floor with my o2. I am unable to work, haven't for 2 years but I have a very understanding and caring family who do a great job supporting me. Ive had em long enough to understand that it is now a part of my life, it helps when you realize that I think. When I do feel decent I love to make music, that is what keeps me pushing on... I hope that helps, time for 02, I can't write anymore. Peace

Hi Aaron & Welcome

Reading your second post looks like it came from the front page of my CH book, I was very much the same but without the meds & o2 works great.

I suggest you go have a good read of Batch's thread 123 day PF; I have a feeling you may be a good candidate, I am on something similar & get lengthy breaks, as much as 2.5 years, lovely feeling it is to.

For a chronic that rocks.

Cheers
Barry

Welcome to the board Aaron. Are you working with a headache specialist neuro yet? We have seen the best results from doing so. There are hundreds of headache types, some which mimic CH, and it’s important to eliminate those before arriving at a firm diagnosis. The fact the indomethacin is helping indicates there may be something else going on. A warning, even most garden variety neuros have very little headache training.

I’ve had CH for 35years, they haven’t killed me yet! You need an organized approach to managing them so they don’t manage your life. I use a 3 pronged approach, many use a similar approach:

1: A good prevent med. A med I take daily, while on cycle, to reduce the number and intensity of my attacks. I use lithium, it blocks 60-70% of my attack. Verapamil is the most common first line prevent, topomax also has a loyal following. Some have to combine lithium and verapamil together to get relief.

2: A transitional med. Most prevents will take up to 2 weeks to become effective. I go on a prednisone taper, from 80 mg to zero over a two week period to give me a break while my prevent builds up. Prednisone will provide up to 100% relief for many CH’ers but is harsh on the system and should only be used for short periods of time.

3: An abortive therapy, the attack starts, now what? Oxygen should be your first line abortive. Breathing pure 02 will abort an attack for me in less then 10 minutes, that’s completely pain free. Read this link as it must be used correctly or it will not work. You saw an improvement switching from 8-15LPM, many see a huge boost in speed and effectiveness of abort when they crank that 02 up to 25 LPM and beyond! I currently use a demand valve, kicks butt.

Imitrex nasal spray and injectables are very effective abortives. I use the injectables, they’re expensive, and I rarely use them, mostly just when I get caught away from the oxygen. The pill form generally works too slow to be effective for CH’ers.

Go to the medications section of this board and read the post " 123 pain free days and i think I know why” It’s a vitamin/mineral/fish oil supplement, all over the counter stuff, that’s providing a lot of relief for people who have tried it, it’s healthy for you even without CH! This is "The Batch Regimen" that Barry referred to. I've been on it 2.5 years which is my longest remission to date.

For now, get some energy drinks. Rock Star, Monster, any containing the combo of caffeine and taurine, chug it down as fast as you can when you feel an attack starting. Many can abort or at least really reduce an attack using these.

Finally, visit our sister board for “alternative” treatment methods outside of mainstream medicine. As you’ll see from all the success stories on this board, there is something to it.

I never said the indomethacin was working... I have only been taking it for two weeks, just last night I had 4 attacks. Yes, I have seen a two headache specialists and about ten different neurologists. I know I have cluster headaches. They all tell me I have them and after 6 years of them I think i'm pretty sure what I have.I haven't tried any of the nasal sprays yet or the fish oil, that is something I will look into right away. Your sister site I have checked out before, I have tried a few things there and am working to try more. Thanks for all the great suggestions so far.

Sorry Had to cut the last one short, twas 02 time. Ill continue here...

The reason my new neurologist has me on Indomethicin is because none of these (Topomax,Lithium,Prednisone,Verapamil) worked. When I say, didn't work I mean more attacks or weird side effects that would have me in hospital. I have to say though I never heard of trying them in combination, I will talk with my neurologist about that.

About the energy drinks :) I used to do that all the time then people started giving me a hard time saying they were bad for me (giving me attacks ect.). I slowly weened myself away from them. After reading what you said though I might try the method of slamming one before an attack.

The oxygen on 15 LPM is working fine for me now, If I went up any higher on LPM id have to get 02 deliveries everyday.I go through many tanks just on 15 LPM. I am comfortable with my 02 at the moment, not sure if I have the right mask though?

Ok, I think that's it...

Verbal, I also have intractable and chronic CHs, and my record with Rxs isn't all that satisfying either. I am taking both verapamil (480mg) and lithium (300mg) daily as a preventative. Still room in both to go up if I need to do so. But my best friend is a double can of Monster chugged, and my O2 Demand Flow valve nonrebreather mask. This delivers up to 60 lpm but incrementally. These two together usually deliver an abort in under 3 minutes. I might still get hit 4-6 times a day/night but the abort is so fast it makes life bearable. And I have my O2 supplier on speed dial.

I did, surprisingly, have success with an Occipital Nerve block. It has prevented attacks since early July. This is my longest period of remision in over 30 years.

Never stop searching and trying. You never know what might work for you. God bless. lance

Thank you Wimsey ;) The past few days I have been trying the Monsters along with my O2. Last night I had a long chat with batch and we talked about other mask options and valves. I am also working on starting the "batch regimen". I'm excited that I have a few new options to try now. Three monsters in the fridge and a fresh delivery of O2 today, I'm ready for the beast tonight. Wish me luck ;)
