Title: Verapamil question.
Post by niavas on Oct 8th, 2012 at 12:45am
Being new to all this, I forgot to ask my doctor whether I take the Verapamil everyday even though my headaches are gone, or do I just stay on them permanently? I would ask her but she is out of office on vacation and am not sure if i stop taking them since I'm out of my cycle it seems. :o
Thanks!

I usually continue taking prevents for at least 2 weeks after the hits stop and all shadows go away to be sure the cycle has ended. But yes, if you are episodic it is usual to stop the meds during remissions.

Edit: Always consult your doctor as to how he wants you to stop a medication, some are ok to stop abruptly, others you may need to taper off of.

Verapamil is something you normally taper off, so do not just stop taking these. Always work with a medical doctor for questions like this.

The exception to the previous comments is: for some folks who have cycles with brief intervals between them may stay on 100% of the time. Rationale is that by the time you taper off using for cycle A, cycle B may be ramping up and so you want to have the Verap working.

It would be in your best medical interest to wait for your doctor to come back from vacation or call the office and inquire what to do.

Many of us ECH'ers begin to taper off Verapamil two weeks after the last CH attack, shadow, etc.  Ask your doc!

Good Luck! ;)
