Title: new to site, question about numbness Post by catjane on Aug 10th, 2012 at 9:56pm
Hi Everyone
This sight seems like a great resource, thank you to everyone who keeps up with it! I live in Atlanta, GA. I have been diagnosed with cluster headaches a year and half ago when I was 27. They started when I was 18 and I had them once around 22-24 and did not know what they were until 27. I had a break from 27 until last week (I am now 28 and almost 29) so that would be around a year and half. I am a healthy female and I do not smoke. For the past two weeks they have been back (always when I am sleeping, waking me up with a full blown headache on the right side) but I have been lucky to have several day breaks in between some. Last night was pretty bad (happened around 1am and lasted until 3:30 INTENSE pain) I took an imitrix right away and it seemed to take forever to kick in. Finally around 4:20 I feel back asleep. No more cluster headaches today but just alot of general numbness throbbing and pain on my right side including my ears jaw and teeth (all day). I have taking ibuprofen today but the throbbing does not go away at least it isnt an Attack. I do have a weird symptom that concerns me and this is what prompted me to write on this sight- my right hand has been numb ALL DAY. this never has happened before and I am worried that I had a mini stroke (I am freaking my self out on the internet reading). IS it possible to have both clusterheads and stroke - or confuse the two? I have all the classic signs of cluster headache but the numbness is starting to freak me out because it has not subsided. I am considering going to the ER but not sure. I have an appointment with the neurologist I saw when I was 27 but I cant see him until 8/23 which is far away. I am going to try to get the imitrex spray and oxygen because the pills take to long to kick in and seem like they make me feel off (left shoulder locks up and I hallucinate and feel numb) but at least it sorta helps with the attack. Any advice would be appreciated! :) thank you so much! |

Thank you everyone for the replies! DJ- I will definitely look into what you posted and I am glad to hear you are doing better. Most of the numbness has gone away since the two MEGA cluster headaches Ive had this cycle but the numbness in my right hand Thumb still remains....its strange...and unsettling. I have since been to the neorolgist and have been perscribed oxygen (being delivered today!) and varapamill (need to go pick up today) I am a little worried because on the Imitrix my heart rate went down to 44 and my blood pressure became really low (normal heart rate is around 70! with normal b/p too) so that was strange and the dr. said no more Imitrix for me! So hopefully my b/p will not get too low with the new Med.
And today has been strange I woke up with I guess what everyone on here calls a "shadow" just a scale 1-2 pain (barely anything) in the cluster area and radiating down to my neck and the rest of the right side of my head, kind of like a reminder that its still here! (even though I did not get a headache last night). The neorogist did not order an MRI this time but he did do a couple (walk straight, touch your nose) type tests. I hope that is enough to make sure all this isnt related to a stroke or something else! Thanks again for all your input! :) |

Catjane, if you described the numbness you are feeling and are worried about sroke, did your doctor say why the MRI was not forthcoming? I ask because MRI's tend to be one of the first tests run for CHs in order to rule out other more dangerous conditions...like stroke. And if you can't take imitrex, try Migranal nasal spray. It's not a triptan and maybe it will work for you. It does for me. God bless. lance

thank you lance..i will def look into it because I haven't heard of that kind of med yet for this! I agree...last time I saw the same Neurologist the first thing he did was order an MRI (that was 1-1/2 years ago) I stopped the cluster episode after that so I never ended up getting the MRI (due to insurance, lack of clusters, feeling fine, work, etc) Now I have them again and he didn't order the MRI just the new meds and no Imitrix....the thing that is weirding me out is the numbness in my thumb...its not normal (on the same side of the cluster headache) would the DR be offended if I said I wanted to get an MRI this time? I am not sure why he didnt order one....He did have me walk, touch my nose, follow his pen with my eyes, etc...so I am not sure...Thank you for any input!

Curious to hear about your results with the oxygen... make sure you read the Oxygen Info link... it is critical to administer correctly.

From what I'm reading your Doctor may think you did have an MRI. Does the Doc know about the numbness? You should understand, CH is usually a life long illness, that won't kill us but there are other similar headache types that can.
