Title: Quick Question
Post by Zenica on Jun 18th, 2011 at 7:25pm
Hey guys,

For those of you that have a ton of medical journals.  Could someone find me an article that talks about the certified difference between migraine and cluster? I need something that explains the medical difference so that I can use it in an insurance claim.

Since I've moved I have a different insurance and my diagnosis of Migraines from the states is a pre-existing condition.  I've got a new diagnosis of Clusters that is completely different to my migraines which always occur in the back of my head.

The clusters do not.  They are behind my eye and along the side of my head.  Last about 30 minutes but spike many times a day.  My GP believes the change in condition is partly because of a skull fracture along the eye socket.  Anyway,  we believe we may be able to get the insurance to cover the new condition if I can prove that they are two separate conditions.

Can anyone help?

Zen

Zenica, The differences really are extreme but you asked for a quick reference.

The only similarities are this:  It is a one-sided pain.  It is in the head.  Everything else is different.

The International Headache Society (START PRINTPAGEMultimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or RegisterEND PRINTPAGE) is the international body that provides the standard classifications for all headache types. It is used by neurologists for the different headache definitions.

The definitions are:
  • Migraine - START PRINTPAGEMultimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or RegisterEND PRINTPAGE
  • Cluster Headache - START PRINTPAGEMultimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or RegisterEND PRINTPAGE

With a different classification, they are recognized as being two distinct types of headache, both being primary headaches.

Refer to the International Headache Society's diagnostic criteria and they will see migraine and cluster are different classifications.
