Title: Medial Branch Block questions
Post by kdeen0201 on Sep 3rd, 2010 at 7:26pm
I'm all for being pain free, but after talking with my pain specialist, I'm not sure about all the risks and not even guaranteed relief. Anybody know about this? Did it work? Should I have a second opinion?

Seriously, anyone. I'm so confused. I haven't really found much info about this procedure. I'm kinda scared since there isn't much out there to research. Anything will help.  Thank you,
Kathleen

I'm initially skeptical because we have 10,000 sufferers here and no one has had this suggested yet. I always hate being the first one for anything. My feeling is to try the high percentage, non invasive routes first, and save surgical intervention for when all else has failed.

From what I am reading on this, it sounds an awful lot like what a neurosurgeon talked to me about many years ago.

50/50 chance of it working for a short time, almost no chance of it working for the long haul and you will lose feeling in the area that is injected.  My advice would be to run.

You haven't tried oxygen yet,  but you are considering surgery?
Oxygen works.

Kathleen,

YES...please do try oxygen or Imitrex as abortives and then some of the preventatives that can do make our life so much better.

I've been chronic for 23 years now and you couldn't get me to do what you are talking about. EVER!

I understand you're confused.  We all were once, but start reading around here.  Start with the links to the left.   It may take a while but it will be worth it for the knowledge you will gain from all of our research and experiences.

I completely agree with all of you about the O2 first. I just can't afford it until next week. My head/neuro guy suggested I see a pain management guy. went to see him and pretty much the first words out of his mouth were "let's do a non invasive procedure to see if that works and we'll go from there. Scared me to death. That's why I'm asking you guys. You all have so much knowledge that I need to learn. Thanks again. and I am calling another pain guy on Monday. Hopefully this guy will know what he's doing.

Kathleen,  Not a lot of us have been to a pain specialsts around here.  Mostly Neurologists or family doctors.   Do you have one?  It might be in your best interests to see one of the two.  Ask them if they have CH patients or have any knowledge about this condition before you even go in and waste your time & money.

I was lucky 23 yrs. ago to be able to go to one of the best..Dr. Lee Kudrow, but after that I just went to my family doctor with whom I had a good working relationship...and spell CH out for him.  He was not prone to be egotistical and said Linda, you know more about these headaches than I do, tell me what you need.

Knowledge is power and that is why I suggested you take the time to read here.  We're all here for any questions that will come up.

Linda,
Her neuro sent her to the pain management specialist  ;D.

That being said, I haven't been real impressed with Pain management docs (at least not the ones I've heard about).  My daughter has chronic pain issues and her doc flat told her that a pain management specialist would not be in her best interest.

O.K. I must have missed that in her post.  A family Doctor would be my next step then.  Kathleen, we're alll here for you sweetie.  Keep asking questions before you do anything drastic o.k.?
