Title: Newbie Here - Just introducing myself Post by Dying in Omaha with CH on Jul 18th, 2010 at 10:52pm
My name is Steff, I live in Omaha, NE with my boyfriend and "hopeful-soon-to-be husband" of 2 years. Though I am not a cluster headache sufferer and don't claim to know their pain, Rob (my bf) is a sufferer, chronic sufferer to top it off! He has had them for about 3 years. He has been to numerous specialists from "Headache" specialists, to ear nose and throat and neurologists. He has even been trying chiropractic treatment, with no relief of the headaches. We will be trying scupuncture next. If that is unsuccessful, we may consider the last resort, deep brain stimulation. It is still experimental for Cluster Headache sufferers and is shown successful in people with Parkinson's Disease. He doesn't have the time or patience to research and join forums such as this one, so I am being proactive in finding every possible treatment. We are desperate for help!

What Bob said. Just left a convention this weekend where they talked a lot about this deep brain stimulation stuff. The potential side effects, stroke, paralysis, death, were extreme to say the least. Definitely to be considered only as a last resort when all other methods have been exhausted.
Has he tried oxygen? 32 year sufferer here and it's still my first and most effective abortive, generally pain free in less thn 10 minutes. Read the oxygen info link as it must be used correctly or it will not work at all. Does he take any daily prevent meds to reduce his attacks? Verapamil and Lithium are 2 great first round tries, the combo of the two is often called the chronic cocktail for the relief it provides the more severe cases. My wife found this site for me originally or I'd still be eating aspirin by the handfull and banging my head against the tile. Lovingly conitnue in your attempts to get him on as first person descriptions and advice are always more effective. Bless you for taking this on, you might wanna spend some time in our supporters section. Good place to get some advice from our better halves on what to do with us when we're in cycle and being pains in the butt! Joe |

Besides what everyone has already said...I would like to add that Chiropractic msy be good for other conditions but has no effect on CH. Save your money.
Oxygen, and a good preventative like Verapamil is what I would suggest. Finding a good Dr. is one of our more challenging aspects with CH and it looks like you haven't been very lucky with that. Don't give up. Keep looking. |

Hey Steff, what a wonderful girlfriend you are!! Looks like everyone else has stepped in and offered some great advice. I agree that oxygen is definately worth a try - and there are plenty of good meds to try before resorting to surgery! Would be great if he'd take a peak over here - no one knows the pain like another clusterhead!!
He's very lucky to have you! Wishin' you both all the best, Kate |
