Title: For the uninsured...
Post by Loric on Mar 7th, 2010 at 4:07pm

I was browsing the topics and i figured I'd throw out some advice I've learned in my last several years as a grown-ass-adult who is too old to be insured with a family plan but still a college student / grad student dealing CH - especially since I saw more then one mention of folks not getting any sort of meds since they were broke.

A) Get ye to a Dr. Tell them ye is poor.

If you have an old family practitioner you used to goto when you were on a family plan/HMO/whatever, 9 out of 10 times they will cut you a deal and spare you, especially as a poor college student. I just know sometimes when I've said "Hi i'm a poor college student and i can't really afford this" they've cut my bill in half or more and sometimes not even charged me.

B) Samples! They have Trex! They can hook you up with shopping baggies of Trex! I once got a month supply out of my old general practitioner's multi-doctor office supply/sample room. She went in there with a big old brown bag and came back with all the Trex she could plus "Here, why don't you give the nasal spray a try and here's the new triptan pill they just put out and gave us samples of too..."

Seriously, even last week at the Walk-in "please pay $100 for your prescription of choice" Clinic they forked out Treximet samples.

So no more flailing in bed and chomping on seeds hoping they work.. seriously..  ::)

Loric,

Check out your state's ins regs again.  I know a number of states have raised the required insurability of "children" to 26, esp if they are students.  Dunno about Fla, but it sure came in handy for my son this year when he went to college.

I was suprised in California.....I work for the county..., my kids stayed on my medical until their 26th birthday, even after they had moved out of the house and were on their own, I was still allowed to carry them on my plan. Never hurts to ask!
