Title: Anesthesia a trigger?

Is anesthesia known to be a trigger?

Any change in the blood chemistry *can* be a trigger. Note that I didn't say "all" changes...or that any change "will" be a trigger - just that blood chemistry changes *can* trigger. It takes 6-9 months for the body to rid itself of anesthetics. Combine that with the fact that they tend to have a rather heavy affect on the gastrointestinal system, serotonin levels tend to fluctuate a bit for a few weeks.

That being said, I have had 4 surgeries in the past 2 1/2 years and can't really say that any of the Godawful crap they've pumped into my system has actually triggered an episode.

Since I've had CH I've also been put out at least a dozen times.  It has never triggered a hit.  In fact, once I was in cycle and got a few days break following a colonoscopy.

That education session with the Ansthesiologist is always interesting.  Most of em think I'm full of shit.  Fortunately, I've never had to prove them wrong.  The last thing I say when they put the mask on is; "if I get hit, you just turn that O2 up as high as it can go".

I was in mid cycle for my colonoscopy a few weeks ago. While the anesthesia left me loopy as a loon for about 12 hours, it did not trigger an attack.

I would be interested in that source too. Always eager to learn something new.

The science of Pharmacokinetics is well beyond me but from curiosity I found this article showing one of the longest known half life of any therapeutic med.

"the plasma half-life of suramin was 44 to 54 days. This is among the longest half-lives reported for any therapeutic substance given to humans."

Ever since I started getting CH's, anesthetic has been a trigger for me and as groggy as I might be, I'm getting hit when I come out of it.
Before I let them put me under I want to see the oxygen set up and ready.  It might only be one hit if I'm out of cycle and it doesn't seem to start a cycle.......but that one hit is more than I'd like.

Wow Gayle, that is terrible.  However, I am the opposite.  I have had 5 surgeries over the years that I have had ch and never been triggered or bothered by the anastesia.
