Title: Anesthesia a trigger? Post by LasVegas on Mar 5th, 2010 at 11:02pm
Is anesthesia known to be a trigger?

Any change in the blood chemistry *can* be a trigger. Note that I didn't say "all" changes...or that any change "will" be a trigger - just that blood chemistry changes *can* trigger. It takes 6-9 months for the body to rid itself of anesthetics. Combine that with the fact that they tend to have a rather heavy affect on the gastrointestinal system, serotonin levels tend to fluctuate a bit for a few weeks.
That being said, I have had 4 surgeries in the past 2 1/2 years and can't really say that any of the Godawful crap they've pumped into my system has actually triggered an episode. |

Since I've had CH I've also been put out at least a dozen times. It has never triggered a hit. In fact, once I was in cycle and got a few days break following a colonoscopy.
That education session with the Ansthesiologist is always interesting. Most of em think I'm full of shit. Fortunately, I've never had to prove them wrong. The last thing I say when they put the mask on is; "if I get hit, you just turn that O2 up as high as it can go". -Dennis- |

I was in mid cycle for my colonoscopy a few weeks ago. While the anesthesia left me loopy as a loon for about 12 hours, it did not trigger an attack.

Ever since I started getting CH's, anesthetic has been a trigger for me and as groggy as I might be, I'm getting hit when I come out of it.
Before I let them put me under I want to see the oxygen set up and ready. It might only be one hit if I'm out of cycle and it doesn't seem to start a cycle.......but that one hit is more than I'd like. Gayle. |

Wow Gayle, that is terrible. However, I am the opposite. I have had 5 surgeries over the years that I have had ch and never been triggered or bothered by the anastesia.
