Title: body temp ?
Post by midwestbeth on Jan 29th, 2010 at 1:22pm
Does anyone else notice a change in body temp when they have a cycle starting up?  I am normally a warm person and when I start getting hit more often than usual, I do notice that my hands are cold and I don't feel as warm as I usually do.  It doesn't matter what the temp is outside when I notice this change.

Just curious....

Interesting...I asked Blake and he said his temp. feels normal.  However, when he's getting a hit he says he's burning up and sweating.  I think that's typical though.

Here's hoping your hands and feet stay warm forever!

With or without the influence of vasoconstrictors?

Without.  I haven't used any conventional meds for over a year.

This is strange but, during a cycle I tend to be warmer than usual.  HOWEVER..... I am freezing and shiver uncontrollably during a hit.

Funny how we all can be so different....

I always get (got) cold extremities whenever I used triptans. But while the hit was happening, I would usually sweat a little.

Potter- eewww! All I know is that I'm usually freezing, but am fine during a ch, even when holding multiple ice packs.

Body temp for me goes way up most times.

I always get hot during hits too, but I feel colder in general when a cycle is trying to start.

Not sure about start of cycle but at the onset of a large kip I get a hot flush starting in my chest, moves quickly up to my face and head. Then during the attack at first I have mild sweating on my forehead and neck. Becomes less apparent as the attack proceeds.

Potter - hamster/gbar - really ? I didn't know what the hell that connection was until I remembered a news story I read some time ago. Worth a laugh though.

Yep - big time overheat during a hit. But only during a hit.

The left side of my face (the side that's hit) gets flushed and warmer during an episode. Occasionally my post shadows will leave my face a bit warmer too.

When I am in the middle part of my cycle, which is the worst and with more hits, I stay cold.  My temp is even low.  Normally, I am a very hot natured person.

Of course I'm not a doctor, but my neurologist told me that cold hands/feet can be a sign of a magnesium deficiency and he thinks magnesium deficiency is related to cluster episodes. It's possible that if you feel cold hands at the beginning of a cycle that it's because of this.

If it's true, it could mean that your episodes may benefit from magnesium supplement (my neurologist gives injections but they don't seem to help me)

Watch it with magnesium supplements - too much and you'll be camping out in the rest room. Or wearing diapers.

Haha. That is so true. My neurologist says that if the supplements put you in the bathroom, that means your body isn't really absorbing.

He gave me a direct shot into my vein which did not send me to the bathroom. Unfortunately it also did not stop my episode as he says it does in 40% of CH patients.

Then again, I never have these "cold hands" and don't know if I am in fact magnesium deficient.

Beth,

All of the above for me. Cold in the beginning of cycle. Hot in the first half of a full attack, then freezing and major shivering after.

I dont notice any change in temp prior but when its in full effect i sweat like crazy then as it fades out i get crazy chills up my back and neck and its like the best feeling ever. Maybe because i know the headache is ending...LOL

Was the shot a quick hit with the needle?  That is likely to be only slightly more effective than a magnesium tablet (unless you have celiac disease or something that messes up your gut). The gold standard is a prolonged intravenous drip, combined with monitoring blood and urine levels of magnesium.

When people have been in a chronic state of low magnesium, taking more magnesium initially results in stable blood levels but little increased excretion via the kidneys ... it goes into muscles and nerves and bones. If blood magnesium is low, you are really in trouble. To prevent this, we evolved with multiple mechanisms to pull magnesium out of other tissues and into the blood ... handy, but it often creates the impression that everything is fine with respect to magnesium when it is not.

The gut has a limited ability to absorb magnesium - so your doc is partially right. If you get loose stools, it means you are taking more than can be absorbed. But taking magnesium right up to bowel tolerance and then backing down a little is the best way the average person can be sure that they are correcting a magnesium deficiency.

BLOOD PRESSURE!

During an attack we all go into panic mode, and thus so does our bodies.  Our blood pressure shoots through the roof.

During an attack i slowly start peeling the clothing off until im down to my shorties! Then as the headaches tapper off i slowly start to shake and shiver until its gone.

I think its the shock the body goes into.  Maybe the heart is trying to shoot blood up to the head to combat the pain.  I dunno.  But this always happens to me.  It sucks.
