Title: new here...new baby at home Post by misee on Nov 16th, 2009 at 9:37pm
Hi...Im 29 and I have had cluster headaches for the past 4 months. I had a baby in june and in mid july I started getting headaches...I now have them 3-6 times a day. Also I left my job so my health insurance ran out and I am waiting for my new insurance to start up in dec. My dr called me in a scipt for imatrex injections...2 shots were 209 and the refill kit with 12 shots were 2400!!! Today I had him try something else and he put me in for the nasal spray... 240 for 6 sprays...but my problem is I am breast feeding and it says not to take if bf...(I take advil every 3-4 hrs) I also ordered headach buster but that says do not take if bf...I know it would be smart to stop bf but she is refusing a bottle and I dont know what else to do right now!...Any sugg? I am hoping to get oxygen once I have insurrance. Untill then does anyone have any home remedies? I was up three times last night..im tired and I am trying to take care of my baby...and somehow keep my sanity...Thank you for any help! I feel for you all!

My first real cycle was after the birth of my 2nd child as well. That is tough. I wondered for a while if it was the epidural but it runs in my family so I gave that up. I didn't take anything during bf because I didn't know what else to do at that time. Things are different now though and others will be along to tell you.
As far as I know, anything you ingest will go to the baby. People here use energy drinks, kudzu, coffee, melatonin, etc. and they will come along and tell you more. But I don't think you can have any of those either while bf. The only thing I know of that might not have anything to do with bf is O2, but you should check that out and see for sure. I know you are waiting on it. Some people here may tell you how to get it asap. I know nothing about it. Maybe you can find out what you need here and just pay to go to a doctor that you know will give it to you until you can get to a headache specialist when your insurance kicks in. I am so sorry this has happened to you. Having and caring for a baby is exhausting in itself. I hope you have good help with that! Congratulations on the baby! My children are my life!!! Joni |

Thanks everyone for listening! I'm lucky to have a supportive husband but it was really helpful to have some support from you all. Great people here! I have found ice packs to be helpful.
I was wondering if it had something to do with the epidural as well...(I think its because Im looking for an answer). Or maybe something to do with my hormones...Did anyones headaches go away when you finished nursing? 2 more weeks untill my insurance is back. I can do anything for two weeks:) Thanks again...looking foward to trying Oxygen yes, I am lucky to have my Mom close by:) |

Glad you have good help!!! Hang in there, I know it is tough! My headaches have never been longer than 2 months, so I can't answer that question about them stopping after bf. In other words, for me, bf had nothing to do with it that I can recall. My girls are 26 and 23 now. You will love every age!!!

Hi Misee.
No easy answers to why we have this pain...no epidurals for me, but I had the clusters before I had kids. I also wonder if it is hormonal too, something different from when I was pregnant? I nursed all the girls, from 6 months to 18 months, and it did not make any difference in the headaches when I stopped. Don't pressure yourself to stop, especially if your baby is refusing the bottle. Just go with what is easiest for you now. Oxygen is surprisingly affordable, way cheaper than Imitrex! If you can get the prescription, I would just try and get the oxygen. 2 weeks seems a long time to wait, especially dealing with the headaches and a baby! Thinking of you CC I forgot to mention that I take Melatonin at night to help sleep. Melatonin is a chemical our body produces to promote a natural sleep cycle. You might want to check it out and see if it can be used while breast feeding!? |
