Title: Exercise to abort smaller hits?
Post by Marc123 on Oct 9th, 2009 at 8:48am
I've heard that when you get smaller hits (K-7 and under I guess), you can exercise through them and it helps to abort them.  I was wondering if this has actually worked for anyone here?

This is another one of the paradoxes of CH! For some, exercise can abort an attack, for others the elevation of body temp. with exercise can trigger attacks. All you can do is try....

Many years ago, before oxygen came into the picture as an abortive, my first doc suggested hard walking to abort an attack. I assume this was an early accidental Rx which served to increase oxygen.

I've had limited success with this - perhaps it's more the brain being distracted by a different activity???

Like Bob said, it's a paradox and not one that's easily solved.  What helps one, triggers another.

Good luck.

The line of distinction can blur for me here  between knowing whether I have a shadow or a K7 coming on, but a few times during this cycle when feeling something coming on I have definitely jumped on my big heavy bicycle with fat underinflated tires and only 7 gears, none of them very low, and barreled up a kind of long hill in the neighborhood, arriving at the top very winded and kip 7/shadow free.

At the beginning of another cycle about 25 years ago, out of desperation I was able to abort some definite hits that were coming on by furiously running in place to the point of exhaustion. This was in the first week of that episode when my hits are easier to abort. After that, running in place just left me exhausted and with a CH.

Yes.

It was my primary abortive for years - before I discovered high flow O2. At the first hint, I hopped on my mountain bike and peddled balls-out to get a strong thigh burn going while gasping for air.

Actually worked very well if I jumped on it fast.

We have a really old guy on this site who aborted something like 60 hits in a row with exercise.

I actually was running during my cycle and I still am probably because i'm in a 5K next weekend, lol!
I'm not sure if cardio helps or not.  I also do those pumping exercises that guy "The Spaniard" use to speak of on here a year or so ago.  He vanished because a few on here didn't believe him.  I guess he was offended.  It worked a couple of times for me or the psychological effects kicked in.  It definitely can't hurt to exercise especially if it isn't affecting or elevating your CH's.

When I get a cycle it tends to be kind of "easy" episodes the first week(s). I pretty much see it as a ramp-up for the "big thing".

During those week(s) I can often affect the attack with extremely intense cardiovascular activity. Full-out crazy interval runs works quite well. I really need to get my breathing into a whole nother mode. Panting, unable to talk is basically  the idea.

Then when the real attacks set in, no excersice works at all. I have also noticed that if my conditioning at a start of cycle is too good, I might have difficulties generating enough strain on the body to get laboured breathing enough to actually get the benefit. But that last one is just on observation based on a hunch - I am not certain about that.

During a cycle some years back, I aborted over 60 attacks in a row by doing squats until my thighs burned and I was really sucking wind.
Then I got lazy and found O2 did the same thing!
