Title: RINGING IN MY EARS
Post by CH-HELL on Sep 24th, 2008 at 7:47pm
Hi every body,  I have had ringing in my ears for three weeks its  driving me crazy the only thing that I have changed is my neuro upped my verp and started me on depakote about a month ago.  I have taken depakote before and I dont remeber this,  I stopped taking it three days ago and I still have the ringing, could it be the verapimil I'm only taking 480mg and in the past I have taken higher doses with no ringing.  I take tons of other meds too.  Just wondering if anyone has this,  I'm going nuts I've got hit by the beast 7 times since midnight with a 7+kip and I have these damn crickets in my ears.   Any advise?        Phil

I've never done Verapamil that high, never done depakote. CH by itself has never caused the ringing for me, any high dose verapamil people out there????

My ears ring and make popping noises, with no verap. The tinnititus is not uncommon.
IMHO

Although I am cutting back on my own to 240mg a day, I have been on 480mg a day for years and not experienced any ringing.  When I was first diagnosed with CH 14 yrs ago depakote was the first med prescibed, but it had other side affects and totally ineffective so I MD took me off and changed, but I don't recall any ringing.  I don't think it is the verapmil, but it could be the combination of meds you are taking or it could be something completely unrelated. Inner Ear problem.

Hopefully this will go away soon, if not I would for sure ask the MD.  Wishbone.

Boy....I get the ringing and I'm not on any of those meds. Feels like a fly got stuck in my ear too. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think it's med related- I believe it's from the pressure.

Thanks everyone I was hoping it was the Depakote but I had an ear infection a couple months ago so its probably tinnititus.  :(   Phil

Hello,

We live in a LOUD society. I have tinnitus (ringing AND roars) and it has nothing to do with meds. As a young person, I considered myself invulnerable. Exposed myself to noise without concern. Paying for it now...protect your ears...they don't "come back". Regrets here....

Best,

Jon

I too neglected my hearing when younger. US Navy flightdecks have an incredible volume level. And I was wearing double hearing protection then, plugs and muffs. I don't think anything can help when you are that close to 30 aircraft screaming constantly. Oh and did I mention the extremely loud and obnoxious heavy metal music I still listen to to this day? But now I need to have it that loud just to hear it. :D Drives my wife nuts.

hey now.

i took depakote for a short time and couldn't handle the side FX, i'm a bit med sensitive. ringing in the ears was one of the problems i had from the depakote very bad it was..neuros got me off it and it stopped..interesting side note the switched me to topamax which is another anticonvulsant drug, like depakote, and guess what?...no go ahead guess...my ears ring constantly. tho its not as severe and i only really notice it when it's quiet. and with a 3 year old in the house that doesn't happen much. hope this helps.

Phil, some meds can cause ringing in the ears, I remember Gator posting about a med he was using for CH that caused ringing in his ears, and he stopped it and had the ringing for a long time.

You may want to check all side effects of all the meds you are taking. That would suck. :(

Thanks everyone this is an old thread I still have a slight ringing in my left ear but it has gotten much better since I quit the Depakote.  I have hearing loss in my left ear from the military and had an ear infection when starting the depakote,   so I feel the Depakote trigger the tinnitis and the ear infection just made it worse.  I will never go back on Depakote not only ringing in the ears but all around feeling like crap and did nothing for my CH, possibaly making my ch worse, but I'm a freak. :o

Phil, glad to hear the ringing's gotten better.  Gary was up to 1000mg of Depakote - it didn't cause the ear ringing, but it DEFINITELY made the CH worse - and it was definitely the Depakote.

Started a thread about it in Meds section - maybe you posted there, sorry, don't remember.  But apparently it made it worse for quite a number of people.

I'm beginning to think the Doctors are freaks for prescribing it.   ::)
