George Carlin, the comedy legend who died on Sunday at the age of 71, became a part of television history on October 11, 1975, as the host of the first-ever episode of "Saturday Night Live." This Saturday, the show, which just completed its 34th season, will pay tribute to Carlin by re-airing that first episode, live from Studio 8H.

It's a rerun that is not often seen - NBC used to run classic episodes in the 3 a.m. repeat slot - and, according to an NBC spokesman, the last time it aired was at 3 a.m. on February 26, 2005.

HBO plans encores programs of George Carlin comedy

Tue Jun 24, 2008 5:51pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - In a tribute to irreverent comedian George Carlin who died this week, cable television network HBO said on Tuesday that it will air encore specials of more than 30 years of his comedy shows starting this week.

Carlin began giving performances on HBO as far back as 1977, almost since the network's inception, and the network will air the first "George Carlin at USC" as well as the final "It's Bad for Ya."

Sister network HBO2 will show 11 of his specials over two nights.

Tonight and tomorrow night, HBO will be running marathons of 11 of their George Carlin specials. The specials range from 1977 to as recent as this year and include such classic routines as "Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television," a routine that was at the time so controversial that it and another monologue eventually led to a groundbreaking Supreme Court case that defined how free our speech can be when aired on television.

The schedule for the specials is as follows:

Wednesday, June 25

8pm:- George Carlin at USC (1977)
9pm:- George Carlin: Again! (1978)
11pm:- Carlin at Carnegie Hall (1982)
12am:- Carlin on Campus (1984)
1am:- Playin' with Your Head (1986)

Thursday, June 26

8pm:- What Am I Doing in New Jersey? (1988)
9pm:- Doin' It Again (1990)
10pm:- Jammin' in New York (1992)
11pm:- Back in Town (1996)
12:05am:- You Are All Diseased (1999)
1am:- It's Bad for Ya (2008)
